Product Information

While the original Kessen took place in feudal Japan, the series' second iteration returns to ancient China and centers on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms saga. In an attempt to rescue Diao Chan, the woman he loves, Liu Bei engages the tyrannical ruler of the Wei Kingdom, Cao Cao, in a vicious war. It soon becomes evident, however, that the outcome of this battle has far-reaching consequences, and Liu Bei must win no matter the cost.<br><br>Before each mission, players are given a rudimentary set of tactical options from which to choose. Strategy, planning, and troop management no longer plays as important a role before battle, although players can recruit more troops or train existing ones. Once in the midst of battle, generals can be directly controlled in a manner reminiscent of the Dynasty Warriors series. Players can engage enemies in combat from a third-person viewpoint, though their actions don't quite have the same bearing on a battle as they do in the aforementioned title. <br><br>Each army has the services of a sorcerer at its disposal, allowing the player to cast spells such as tornadoes, earthquakes, meteor showers, and more. Careful use of these spells is advised, because they can do just as much damage to your own troops as they can the enemy's. The various squads forming your army consist of foot soldiers, archers, cavalry, winged troops, and elephants, among others. Though they're set before each mission, unit formations can be changed in the middle of battle if desired. Cut-scenes occur during battle as well as between stages, and engage the player in the epic tale of love, romance, and war.

Goofy but pleasantly entertaining.
I'd like to start off by saying if you are a fan of Romance of the Three Kingdoms and are looking for a game that follows that story-line then stay very, VERY far away from this game. Yes, this game does involve the three kingdoms and their respective rulers such as the ever cunning and ambitious Cao Cao who is very much portrayed as the cold and calculating villain of the story (with a softer side here and there) and Liu Bei - the ever charismatic and almost annoyingly naive Hero looking to sacrifice armies to save his beloved Diao Chan...Who supposedly had nothing to actually do with Liu Bei...Did they get the two confused and replace Liu Bei with Lu Bu? Oh, and Sun Quan is thrown in there for good measure as well. Anyway, I digress. The real fun to be had here is the battle system. ... Neat magic tricks and old rivalries still exist between some of the generals such as the widely proclaimed God of War in that era - Guan Yu and Zhang Liao. Awesome duels to watch and great scenarios that aren't historically accurate...Or even close, but still entertaining none the less. What I really wish they would have added was a Wu campaign since there is a great deal of content that could be played out with that faction and it's many interesting officers. I give the game a solid 4 out of 5 for sheer fun. I sort of wish they wouldn't have...Uh...Japanesed it up as much as far as story and characters (I mean they turned Yu Jin and others into females...) but I'm a sucker for anything around this period of China so it didn't get to me too much.

The game takes place back in an ancient era where Lui Bei's beloved Diao Chan is kidnapped by Cao Cao who invaded and attacked his kingdom. Lui Bei, his brother and other commanders aid him into battle and selfishly risk his men to rescue this ONE PERSON, Diao Chan. The thing i fell in love with, was the fact that magic is used during battle. Not all, but some commanders have the ability to chant spells and kill thousands of enemies at the same time. for example, some spells are Hail, Thunder, Ice Storm, Fissure, Gale, Meteor, Fire Storm, Fire ball etc. These commanders fly in the air, chant awesome spells that i enjoy hearing, and shoot it down, however after you've chanted a spell, it takes a WHILE to recharge, ... Now of course you play Lui Bei's side of the army first. but after you beat the game, you have the option to play Cao Cao's side, which in my opinion has the STRONGEST army then Lui Bei who has LITTLE battling skills. you also unlock a secret level, if you play on hard mode. Both Cao Cao and Lui Bei's army will counter OTHER nations who will either be against them or for them, so in a way youre recruiting many others as you go. be pretty smart to recruit those who have magic spells. buy the game, sit back and enjoy.

Thought the basic concept remains the same, Kessen 2 is a major step up in a number of ways. First, the graphics are a major step up compared to the first one. The voice acting is much better and the overall appearance is much more crisp. Second, the game play takes a couple of steps forward, by allowing you to take more direct control of the action. It allows you to perform special maneuvers at critical times, rather than ... It offers a variety of new options to grab your attention, while maintaining the same core system that made the original so great. If you enjoyed the first kessen, then i highly recommend purchasing this game.
