And I've seen at least half a dozen attempts. John Scofield does a great job in his "On Jazz Improvisation" video, but Frank takes it one step further. He explains very clearly the way to actually USE the modes. I had gotten tired of people simply telling me that "mode number five is the Mixolydian and should be played over dominant seventh chords" and leaving it at that. That's about as helpful as teaching someone that 2+2=4 without teaching them the concept of quantity. Frank actually takes the time to explain some basic modal progressions, and then, plays each mode using C as the base for the mode. For example starting off in C we get C Ionian. Frank plays a simple riff in the key of C, using C as the tonal center and we get to hear the famous major key love song sound. But... instead of playing D Dorian next, Frank plays C Dorian which occurs in the key of Bb Maj. He adjusts the progression (and actually explains how he's doing that) to suit Bb Maj with a C tonal center and then plays a few minutes of C Dorian. So you learn by being able to hear all the modes played using the same tonal center. An amazingly effective approach. If you are at the point where you know the diatonic major scale fairly well, and are trying to figure out how to use modes, this is the lecture for you. Frank is a skilled teacher as well as player. Two great tastes that go great together. I recommend this to anyone ready for modal theory.Read full review
This DVD was revised in 2002 and 2005. The presentation of the material is as clear and concise as it gets. A great teaching tool.
frank gambale super. excellent thanks I'm sorry I do not know much English. I write I do not know
It does what it's supposed to do. Explain modes. Simple. It's worth it just to see frank Gambale in 80's leather pants and a pink tweety shirt. Awesome. LOL
I was very murky on the modes for decades, but, this DVD really breaks it down and makes it fun to learn!
