About this product

Product Information

British director Tony Richardson takes on John Irving's picaresque black comedy about an eccentric and unusually peripatetic family in a film starring Rob Lowe as John Berry, the family's oldest son. John's father, Win (Beau Bridges), is obsessed with hotels, so he buys a run-down seminary in New England, transforming it into the Hotel New Hampshire. The extended family includes the profanity-spouting Franny (Jodie Foster); Lily (Jennifer Dundas); a dwarf, Frank (Paul McCrane), who is gay; John, who is strongly attracted to his sister; Egg (Seth Green), the youngest boy; and Iowa Bob (Wilford Brimley), Win's father. After a number of tragic incidents, including the gang rape of Franny, are seen through the special lenses of black comedy, the family is invited to take over another hotel in Vienna, courtesy of their friend Freud (Wallace Shawn). On arrival, they find that the upper floors of the hotel are dedicated to prostitution and the bottom floors are occupied by terrorists. They also meet Freud's companion, Susie the Bear (Nastassia Kinski), a woman so obsessed with her unattractiveness that she spends all her time in a bear suit. Richardson elicits fine performances from his talented cast in this wild ride through the mind of John Irving.

    Classic Cult Film

This film has been on my "get it" list for 20 plus years. I'm glad to finally own it.

  • OK, Not the Book, but REALLY worth a watch....

Ok, I find myself and others often saying, "it isn't as good as the book". More often than not IT IS true. I am an avid reader and often find myself thinking, "oh NO, not how it was "...or "that's not who should play that character". Bridges of Madison County comes to mind first. OK, Good movie- GREAT BOOK. That being said. I like this movie, I like it a lot. It is NOT the book- but a Good interpretation of Irving's novel. This is NO Cider House Rules, so what. It is charming in it's own way. Rob Lowe leaves a bit to be desired but so does a few of his 80's films, remember Youngblood ?? Whoa, Makes Brooke Shields' performance in Blue Lagoon Oscar worthy. That being said, Rob Lowe is young - that's I guess my point. It is a great story and a FABULOUS glimpse at a YOUNG Jodie Foster, Beau ...

  • The book was MUCH better

I was disappointed in this movie for many reasons. Minute details of the book were crammed into the movie, which would make the movie very hard to follow if the viewer did not read the book. A lot of Irving's books have strange sexual themes, which sometimes do not translate to the big screen, and "Hotel New Hampshire" is one of those books. While it is one of Irving's best books, and gives a lot of history for each character, the movie left the characters shallow and undeveloped. Too bad, because a wonderful acting job by Jodie Foster was wasted on a phrenetic, nonsensical movie. Rob Lowe's performance (or lack thereof) really hurts the movie, but the adaptation of Irving's novel to the big screen (unlike Cider House Rules) left much to be desired.

  • Overdue to add to my DVD collection

I used to own this movie years ago on VHS and have been long overdue at replacing it. I have always been a big fan of Nastassja Kinski.
