    Having read several books by Simon Schama I am not disappointed to find that this book, the first of three, is excellent. Schama takes the reader back to the very, very early history of Britain, (long before it was Britain), and brings the reader through the ages to appreciate all the changes that the British Islands experienced as they were assaulted, conquered, and introduced to new cultures and religion, and helps the reader to understand the complexity of the human condition on these islands through many centuries. Schama is no stranger to detail, but he also allows the reader to "get the picture" without having read any other history on the subject. However, if one has read other histories he includes details that surprise the reader and makes it worthwhile to read this series of ...
