About this product

Product Information

Whether you plan on sightseeing or just want to take quality photos from far away, the Nikon 500mm f8 lens gives your Nikon camera that extra edge, allowing you to take crisp and clear photos. It features both auto and manual focus, making it perfect for use by both professional and amateur photographers. This particular mirror lens also runs on the lighter side for Nikon lenses, which makes it appeal to many frequent travelers. It is the lightest of the reflex-Nikkor line, eliminating the need to use a tripod when using it for long shots. For that reason, many nature photographers rely on it when they are outdoors trying to capture wildlife. Those wanting to take their camera out in the field also love the lightweight design. This reflex-nikkor weighs approximately 2 pounds, while most other compatible lenses weigh in closer to 10 pounds. Another advantage to taking the Nikon 500mm f/8 out in the wild or even just using it for photos on the beach is the fact that it comes with a 82mm front filter and a 39mm rear filter to protect the lens against elements like dirt and dust. Its size fits to all Nikon digital cameras, and it results in sharper pictures compared to some of the older reflex-Nikkor lenses as well as other comparable models. Since it is a mirror lens, the Nikon 500mm f/8 lens allows for a wider range of images that are hard to capture using other equipment. The mirror has a coated reflection to result in more refined photos, also featuring a five-degree picture angle to give you the best view from any side. Having an f/8 aperture allows you to take many photos in a small window of time. This comes in handy in many situations, like photographing sports, animals, or children. An f/8 aperture is also helpful if you plan on taking a road trip and want to try and snap a few photos along the way without stopping and getting out of the vehicle. Overall, the f/8 aperture coupled with a focal length of 500mm gives you the opportunity to capture clear shots of the surrounding landscape as you travel and sightsee. The new construction of the Nikon 500mm f/8 has eliminated the dreaded hot spot or bokeh donut effect many photographers complained about from earlier Nikkor lenses comparable to this model. For that reason, this lens responds better to different lights and is used in high light settings like a bright sunny morning or at night, lighted by natural moonlight. Images also have a much better contrast quality than those taken with earlier lenses, and it includes filters to get even more effects. Since it works with all Nikon cameras, many camera owners have chosen to use this Nikkor as their main lens.

Asked the seller why the postage is so expensive, the seller increased the item price and decreased shipping. And did not explain why, like a rude kid. As the item is listed "As-Is" can't complain about this. Be aware many japan sellers label their items as "near mint" but in reality its totally unusable.

Size and weight a big advantage over other 500mm lenses.

The Nikkor 500mm f/8 Reflex C has the quality of a Nikon. It is really built well, very impressive. Optical quality appears to be excellent. The lens is manual focus only and has a fixed f/8 aperture, so it can be used in either manual or aperture priority exposure mode. So far I am pleased with the build and optical quality.

  • 500mm mirror reflex

This is going to be a love / hate relationship - not going to be much gray area in between for most users. It fits the new DSLR's with modifications to the non ai versions (check to see if it's been "modded" first) or maybe you get lucky and it's a newer version. (Orange stripe around lens usually means it's good to go out of the box) Bokeh is unique, has fall off at the periphery, fixed aperture (Cadiotropic lens), and depth of field is TIGHT. But I love it. Gives a unique perspective and "look" you just can't get with any other lens. Is it for everybody? Nope! But if you want a really lightweight high power lens that's actually more useful in the digital world than it ever was in film this may just be a lens to add to your collection.

  • Nikon N Best Reflex Value

This reflex beats all the other Nikons as well as the Canon S.S.C., Tamron 55BB, Sigma 600mm f8, Vivitar Solid CAT 800mm and the Olympus OM for sharpness, clarity, color quality, weight (except the 55BB), construction and superb manual focus allowing for very exact fine adjustment. Keep looking "patiently"--a good example can be had for under $400. I have not owned a Mirotar yet, however you will pay about double the price of the Nikon N. The Nikon Teleconverter TC-14B 1.4X is also optically superior and does not degrade the N's performance.

  • Perfect service for a perfect product.

The lens came 2 days ago, it's in PERFECT shape not a scratch on the glass nor on the body of the lens, simply bran new, love it ! Dont let the casing fool you the inside was mint state. As far as the performance of the lens itself, I'm using it for astronomy picture. Had a chance to try it on my equilateral tripod, it's easy to cary, fast and simple to put in place and with exposure of 1 to 5 minutes on a 24Mpix camera it's a dream !!

  • Sharp but low contrast

Lens is sharp but low in contrast requiring turning up the clarity in Lightroom. Used on a Nikon Z7, IBIS is little use. Can be chipped using dandelion chip to allow for focus confirmation on the Z5/Z6/Z7. Focuses down to 1:2.5 for its macro function. Has odd bokeh but is correctable in photoshop. Overall, it cannot be beat if looking for a narrow angle of view with very little weight and size. It is useless outside of a zoo for wildlife because it is manual focus.
