About this product

Product Information

Secure a beautiful piece of American heritage with the 1954-S 50C Franklin half dollar. This lovely silver coin features a unique symbol of liberty, justice, and freedom. The front of this half dollar features the bust of Benjamin Franklin. He is a founding statesman with a fascinating history and legacy. He was the only non-president to appear on U.S. coins until the creation of the Susan B. Anthony dollar coins. The word "Liberty" is printed in bold lettering above Franklin's head. "In God We Trust" is printed just below his head. The back of this gorgeous silver piece depicts the Liberty Bell. This rendition of the historic bell in Franklin's home of Philadelphia is appealing because of its artistry and design. The bell on the coin was detailed so wonderfully by designer John R. Sinnock that even its infamous crack shows up easily. Surrounding the Liberty Bell are the words "E Pluribus Unum" as well as an eagle with wide-open wings. The eagle was required to appear on all similar pieces of that era. With this beautiful coin, you hold a piece of history. For children and adults alike, this coin presents a great opportunity for history lessons, including the role of the San Francisco mint and the historical developments in America in 1954. It is great for spiking curiosity about Benjamin Franklin as a founding father, the eagle as a symbol for freedom, and the history of the famous freedom bell with the historic crack down its side. This lovely silver piece can spark an entire session of study, show-and-tell at school, a history report, or a family conversation. The values of silver coins like nickels, dimes, silver dollars, and half dollars are based on the price of silver. Similarly, gold coins fluctuate with the price of gold. Although valued at 50 cents when first minted, these collectible coins are worth a different amount after more than 50 years. The mintage of this 1954 half dollar is also interesting. On the back of this coin, at the very top, is the letter "S." This is the mint mark of the San Francisco mint, which produced fewer of these coins than other mints. The mintage of the 1954-S Franklin half dollar was under 5 million circulated coins. This is far fewer than the silver half dollars produced from other mints, which adds a unique and interesting historical quality to this coin. Many collectors enjoy silver and gold currency, which is rarer today with paper money and less precious metals in circulation. Coins of silver and gold create a wonderful connection with history and a hobby that the whole family can enjoy.
