      Out of Square, square

      One thing I think everyone assmues is that when you buy a square that it will be square. Although this little combination square is nice in every other way, it came out of square a heavy 32nd " in 3". Not acceptable by any standards. Not wishing to go through the hassle of returning it, I ripped a thin straight peice of wood and glued a peice of emory cloth to the edge to file the fingers that the tang rides against while holding it against a known true square to dial it nto square, a laboriou process of stopping to check it every few strokes about 20 times. I know they have machines that do this perfect every time, why it wasn't done on this square I have no idea. I expect having to do this kind of tuning on HF tools but never would have dreamed it on an Irwin tool.

      Brass locking nut

      Some combination squares have plastic locking nuts that have threads that strip after some time. This one has a brass locking nut that I expect to last much longer.
