I've had my eye on a couple of hockey games for the Xbox 360 for some time now, and this specific title caught my eye. NHL 2K9 was developed in 2008, but still has great graphics for the time. Compare it to NHL 10 and you will see only minor differences. If money is a concern, or has any effect on which game to buy; you will want to choose 2K9's version and save at least $25. The game is easy to play, and the controls were simple to understand (10 minutes?). Playing with friends is much more fun, but a couple of solo games are not bad. All in all, this game has not received the full credit it deserves. Looking for a great new game? Just save up about $6 and go out to find NHL 2K9. Fun gaming.
NHL 2K9 IS A VERY GOOD GAME... I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT TO SPORTS FANS...IF YOU NEVER PLAYED HOCKEY BEFORE , I SUGGEST YOU GET A COPY.... GRAPHICS ARE NICE, PLAYER FACES NEED WORK... PRESENTATION IS NOTHING SPECIAL, BUT ITS GOOD.... SKATING IS GREAT, AND PLAYER MOVMENTS ARE NICE... MECHANICS AND CONTROL HAS A GOOD FEEL TO IT.. GOOD JOB WITH THE ENGINE 2K.... OVERALL, I GIVE THIS GAME 8.5 OUT OF 10 BUT I AM A TOUGH CRITIC..... IN GENERAL : THE WHOLE IDEA OF NEX-GEN GAMING IS NOT ALL THAT...YES GAMES AND CONSOLES GIVE YOU MORE REALISM, BETTER GRAPHICS, GREAT SOUND, ECT... BUT FOR THE PRICE OF THE CONSOLES , GAMES, AND ACCESSORIES.... I AM NOT AMUSED... I HAVE BEEN PLAYING GAMES SINCE ATARI, COLECOVISION, NINTENDO, SEGA, ECT... I HAVE OWNED ALMOST EVERY CONSOLE FROM DAY 1.... YES THINGS HAVE IMPROVED A LOT, BUT WE AS CONSUMERS ARE STILL BEING OVER CHARGED... IF THESE COMPANIES STOP THE WAR ON LICENSE (EA MADDEN, NCAA FOOBALL, NCAA BASKETBALL, NASCAR) SOMEONE WILL PUT OUT A GREAT GAME !!! THERE IS NO COMPETITION, LIKE THE GOOD OLD DAYS, SO COMPANY'S CAN MAKE GAMES AND NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT SALES.... EXAMPLE (NOT TO PICK ON EA, BUT THATS THE BEST EXAMPLE) IF YOU WANT TO PLAY FOOTBALL, NCAA OR MADDEN ARE YOUR ONLY CHOICES... (REAL PLAYERS, TEAMS, STADIUMS, ECT) EA OWNS THE RIGHTS, SO NO OTHER COMPANY CAN MAKE A REAL FOOTBALL GAME... AND UNFORTUNATELY EA ISN'T ALWAYS THE BEST... THE LICENSE WAR MUST END... I HAVE NOT SEEN A GOOD BOXING GAME IN OVER 2 YEARS.... FIGHT NIGHT 3 WAS THE LAST ONE......AND THEY FELL SHORT ON BOXERS... NO GEORGE FORMAN, ROCKY MARCIANO, LARRY HOLMES, TYSON, KLITCHKO, LEWIS, ... I COULD GO ON... END THE LICENSE WAR... COMPETITION BRINGS BETTER GAMES AND CREATIVITY..... unoniceRead full review
I didn't give this game enough credit when I first tried it out. It's much more enjoyable once you turn down the game's awful soundtrack, and the commentary is lacking (which I turned down as well). The game does have some minor issues, but I found the game play to be easy to pick up and the graphics are nice and smooth. There are also some cool things like choosing certain teams from years past or creating your own player, or playing an outdoor game. Definitely worth trying if you want a solid hockey game.
I really liked the NHL 2K series on Xbox, I always found them to be more realistic than EA's versions. The last game I had was NHL 2K7 on Xbox and I liked it a lot. I don't care for the analog-stick controls of EA's NHL 09 and 2K9 was super-cheap so I went ahead and got it. I must say it is very disappointing. I think the graphics on the old Xbox version may be better than the Xbox 360, and the physics seem to be really bad. The player movements are jerky, the puck just launches off of their stick. There is no flow to the game at all. They did finally get new announcers, though they seem to be reading from the same script because it seems several of their quips are the same ones the old guys used to say. The game constantly says the wrong player names (especially goalies), which is a bug the 2K hockey games have had for years.Read full review
This is a great straight-up arcade hockey game--good controls, graphics, and gameplay. BUT, that is all it is. It has virtually no "extras" nor special features (that are worth mentioning, anyway). If you want a cheap game of pure hockey that you can pick up and play, this is it. I bought it for $7, and I'm happy with my purchase.
