First Gear 1/34 scale diecast 1953 White 3000 with tank trailer for Mobil Hamilton-Wilber Oil Co.
The White 3000 was one of the first compact tilt-cab truck designs and was produced 1948-66. White had produced compact cab-over-engine trucks since the 1930’s and the 3000-series was a distinctive design mainly due to the nearly perfectly rounded cab front and a geared electric tilt mechanism. The trucks were almost universally gasoline engine trucks, using a variety of inline 6 cylinder engines from White and from Hercules, Continental, and other independent engine makers. The major application for the White 3000 was for intercity delivery, the short wheelbase and compact dimensions made it handy for tight alleys and busy streets. First Gear produced their White 3000 model with box van, petroleum tanker, and two-axle tractor and semi-trailer versions, and also an unusual skirted high ... The White 3000 was one of the first compact tilt-cab truck designs and was produced 1948-66. The First Gear model is generally very well done especially the nicely detailed spoke wheels and tires. The only real disappointment is the front grille which lacks detail and highlighting and is rendered too flat and toy-like, the grille would really benefit from being cut through. This First Gear model features a single-axle tank trailer which seems to have an unusual configuration. The trailer has a single loading hatch and a single 4" discharge connection, so the tank could only carry a single grade of fuel. Based on single-axle load limits and an estimated weight of 10,000 lbs for the trailer, this tank truck could likely only carry maximum 3200 gallons of gasoline or 2700 gallons of diesel fuel, which is much less than contemporary fuel delivery trucks. Most gasoline station delivery tank trucks are configured to carry several segregated grades of fuel. Mobil Oil Corporation was created from the breakup of Standard Oil in 1911; "SOCONY" was Standard Oil Company of New York. The name "Mobil" was a marketing brand for the company and in 1966 the company changed the company name to Mobil Oil Corporation and dropped the Socony name. In 1999 Mobil merged with Exxon to become ExxonMobil. This 1953 White 3000 truck has the Hamilton-Wilber Oil Co. of Moravia, New York, a fuel oil dealer founded in 1947, on the doors and shows the Mobil company logo redesign from 1955 on the placard. The red paint color for the truck does appears to be correct for the period, Mobil traditionally used red until the 1960's when they transitioned to "Bahama Beige" for their trucks.
