I removed the old battery from the watch without noting its position. This battery (aka capacitor) has a copper connector and unlike non rechargeable batteries must be installed in a certain position so that the copper tab makes the necessary contact. After trial and error and searching I managed to find a Youtube entry that showed a watch movement similiar to my watch and which also uses the MT516 battery. After correctly repositioning the battery & charging it, the watch is now working..
