Synopsis
Logen Ninefingers, infamous barbarian, has finally run out of luck. Caught in one feud too many, he's on the verge of becoming a dead barbarian leaving nothing behind him but bad songs, dead friends, and a lot of happy enemies. Nobleman, dashing officer, and paragon of selfishness, Captain Jezal dan Luthar has nothing more dangerous in mind than fleecing his friends at cards and dreaming of glory in the fencing circle. But war is brewing, and on the battlefields of the frozen North they fight by altogether bloodier rules. Inquisitor Glokta, cripple turned torturer, would like nothing better than to see Jezal come home in a box. But then Glokta hates everyone: cutting treason out of the Union one confession at a time leaves little room for friendship. His latest trail of corpses may lead him right to the rotten heart of government, if he can stay alive long enough to follow it. Enter the wizard, Bayaz. A bald old man with a terrible temper and a pathetic assistant, he could be the First of the Magi, he could be a spectacular fraud, but whatever he is, he's about to make the lives of Logen, Jezal, and Glotka a whole lot more difficult. Murderous conspiracies rise to the surface, old scores are ready to be settled, and the line between hero and villain is sharp enough to draw blood. Unpredictable, compelling, wickedly funny, and packed with unforgettable characters, The Blade Itself is noir fantasy with a real cutting edge., Logen Ninefingers, infamous barbarian, has finally run out of luck. I love the Byers Choice 1988 "The Carolers" Gray Cat with Striped Stocking Cap that I purchased from MPC. It is just as described and pictured on its product page. It was a good price for the item and so was the shipping cost. It was packed well, shipped quickly and arrived in a reasonable amount of time. I am a happy and grateful customer.

  • Reposted from my review on Goodreads

Rarely have I read a book and so quickly needed to go buy the sequels. I don't' want to give away ANY spoilers, so I'm going to leave this review really vague. But, to give you an example, the last time I got this absorbed in a series was with my introduction to Game of Thrones. This is not a fluffy read, yet I still got through it in only two days. It helped that I was out sick, but I might have been "sick" to get through it even if I hadn't really had a cold. People who like straightforward "good guy" and "bad guy" characters probably won't like Abercrombie's work, but in a generation of anti-heroes I think he does an amazing job of developing his characters. Now it's just too bad the post office is so slow with media mail because I'm still waiting for book #2. ARG!

  • Amusingly dark.

I've read a lot of fantasy books, but "The Blade Itself" is constantly surprising in the best of ways. The characters are engaging, and even the ones that seem stereotypical at first glance will twist in delightful ways. This is grimdark though, and the author doesn't shy away from treating it's subject matter honestly and brutally. If that's something you like, (like I do), it is a wonderful example of the genre.

  • The Blade Itself

I liked the book although it seemed take me some time before I got into it. Although I was told I would like this book as I really liked Robin Hobb's Assassin's Trilogy I don't think that it reads as well nor are the characters as well defined or very likable. That said I bought the second book in the series "Before they are hanged" and look forward to reading it..

  • It's good

I like the author's style of conveying information and random musings. I also like this type of literature. Very entertaining and amusing.

  • Worth a read.

The book is in great shape, was well packaged and arrived within the promised delivery window. If you like sword and sorcery and can stomach torture, bloody battles, and general depictions of humans inhumanity, it is a good tale. So far, I am not as impressed with it as I was with LOTR and GOT. Admittedly, those are high bars, IMO.
