This is a 5 star machine all the way.
This is a 5-star machine all the way. I am a retired Mechanical engineer and machinist. The unit is very heavy and solid. I prefer cast iron construction over the steel frames used by some as it is much better at absorbing vibration. The fit and finish are superb. I leveled the bed with my Starrett machinist level, and the tailstock/headstock alignment was within a couple thousands. Actually, surprising since the head and tail must have a slight clearance in the bed slot. The VFD is not an inexpensive unit. It is an industrial quality unit providing about 2 to 145 Hz for the published spindle speeds. It provides near full torque and near zero speed. I did fault the drive once while turning a large chunk of oak, but it reset itself automatically. Very pleased with the unit. I would ... This is a 5-star machine all the way. I would have liked to have had an option for a 1 ½”-8 thread and #3 morse taper, but it seems all manufacturers have gone with the 1 ¼”-8 and #2 morse taper. The #3 morse is easier to clean and provides a stronger spur center grip. I purchased a threaded spur center. The 1 ¼”-8 thread measured about 0.010” undersize as measured with “PeeDee” wires. However, this does not affect the centering of a chuck. I think they did this so the threads would not bind if covered with sawdust.
