Designing Woman (1957), directed by Vincente Minelli and starring Lauren Bacall and Gregory Peck, is an enjoyable, light comedy about the problems encountered by a sports writer and fashion designer who are married after knowing each other only a few days on vacation. Bacall is repulsed by Peck's poker buddies, his punchy boxer friend, and the sight of blood. Peck can't stand her artsy theater associates. And then there's the matter of Peck's old flame who is hired to be the star of the Broadway show for which Bacall is in charge of wardrobe. The story is told in voiceover from each of the characters, and this trend begins with the very first shot of Peck at his desk. I found the use of VOs a bit annoying at first but later got used to it. The film overall reminded me of a not-as-good attempt to emulate the great Doris Day-Rock Hudson romantic comedies. Designing Woman is an entertaining and enjoyable film, and Peck and Bacall are both strong in their parts. There are some very funny moments, such as when Peck's old flame throws a plate of ravioli in his lap and he must borrow the busboy's pants, which are several sizes too small for Peck. Bacall's expressions are hilarious, and she is impressive in this comedic role. You should see this film in its original aspect ratio, because Minelli makes good, creative use of CinemaScope. I feel Designing Woman is a film worth seeing, but I would recommend renting it over buying, unless you can find a low price on eBay. It's a good movie, yet probably not the type one would want to watch multiple times.Read full review
Fabulous! A cleverly written class act well performed by fine actors who are skilled enough to bring their characters to life and who are able to actually speak properly, enunciate clearly (except for Mickey), bathe regularly, groom themselves smartly, dress appropriately, and behave professionally. Great story line, wonderful fashion designs, excellent in every way. So unlike the low class, boring, less-than-intellectual crap performed by self-centered poorly skilled overpaid moronic prima donnas that the mo pic industry is foisting off on the public nowadays.
