I hemmed and hawed about buying my Big Berkey some seven years ago or so. That is, until I tried the various filters you ad on to your tap......EXPENSIVE!!! The initial outlay for the BB sort of smarted, but I figured it paid for itself in a year. Our water here is tolerable, but it contains a lot of chlorine. The BB eliminates that......fresh, clean tasting water all the time! I drink from it, fill my hiking hydration systems with it, cook with it. When it came time to replace the original two filter units (they were still working fine, way past the recommended replacement period) I opted for the additional two filters.....it makes clean water much, much faster.

These are not the first Berkley filters I've bought, but they are the first that WOULD NOT prime. I've had this system for several years and I love it, but this particular set of filters must be defective. The water takes a very long time to filter through. Very inconvenient.

The filters are easy to use and produce excellent water quality. Occasional maintenance and cleaning will be required to provide best results. Sanitizing is recommended periodically. Filters can be 'washes' with a clean dish brush evenly and rinse to remove a thin surface area. Some simple test kits (Clorine, Nitrate, etc.) are available to monitor water quality. Filters produce water very slowly, so stay ahead of the need quite a bit and replenish as needed. Store water in ceramic, glass or stainless containers...the cleaner the water, the more it wants to take on chemicals, especially from plastics.

5 stars. Filters are glued to base. One must be very careful when cleaning not to bend or twist or black filter breaks from the rubber base. Suggest buying the purger unit so that you don't have to go out in all seasons to repurge the unit using the hose and getting all wet. BUT I love these filters and have been using the Berkey for maybe 10 years. We are on a well with a lot of iron. This removes most of the iron.

I thought our water needs had outgrown our Travel Berkey until I replaced the original, now five year-old, filters with this new set. The new set arrived ahead of schedule and installed easily. The water ran through them so fast I thought there might be a problem so I tested them with red food coloring. The filtered water was crystal clear. These new filters saved us a lot of money!
