American Indian History - Their Side of the Story
Most of us grew up learning about American history from the Euro-American point of view. It was a point of view that was very slanted and put the white "invaders" in the most favorable light, while relegating the Indians to hostile savage status. PBS is known for its quality productions, and We Shall Remain is no exception. Five historic and pivotal points in history were recreated, with portrayals of key, influential men who desperately tried to stave off annihilation and loss of land and culture. The series begins with the arrival of the first white men, and continues with histories of Tecumseh, Tenskwatawa, Geronimo, and Fools Crow and their people. We finally see Indians as people, human beings, whose only desire was to live as they chose without interference on their land. ... Native American (Indian) actors bring these long overlooked men to life with skill and passion. Old wounds have not healed, as evidenced by the final, fifth, episode about Wounded Knee 1973. It serves to remind us that the Indian struggle for equality and respect is an ongoing struggle to this day. One reviewer said this was a "biased" history showing the native people in a good light. I say it's about time we took off the blinders about American history and learn the truth. This series is well presented and done with political overtones. It is, simply put, the Indians' story, told by the Indians. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Hauntingly accurate story of the American Indian
I expected this set to be good but it turned out excellent. Very easy to follow and painfully truthful. It will change your mind about a lot of "history". I sort of wish it had more acting and less narration but I believe a lot of truths would have been lost without the story telling. It took three night of viewing to watch the whole thing,and every night was an experience of revelation. The scenes and words continue in my memory, it was that profound, things you can't forget. You need to see this. It is haunting and it should be! Along with the story photography and scenery is incredible, second to none. A beautifully made, faithfully true, and brutely accurate depiction of the American Indian. I highly recommend this set of videos.I expected this set to be good but it turned out excellent. This is a MUST SEE DVD Set...SHOULD BE TAUGHT IN SCHOOLS AS A MANDITORY CLASS ..I saw the series on PBS and HAD TO PURCHASE IT - I was so amazed by the the actions of the Intruders that came to this land from afar and brought their evilness with them, lied too and did things to the Native American Indians that WAS so apauling to me - Made them out to be so bad when they were only fighting for what was theirs in the only way they knew how, after the white man LIED to them time and time again, could they trust them and their word... NO they couldn't. I am part Cherokee and feel the TRUE MINORITY OF THIS COUNTRY-AMERICA IS THE NATIVE AMERICAN INDIANS - NOT THE OTHERS WHO CLAIM TO BE. I cried for the Native American Indians .. MY PEOPLE AND MY HEART HURTS FROM WHAT WAS DONE TO THEM. ... The PBS American Experience: We Shall Remain was an excellent series on several points. It taught American history through the eyes of the Native Americans and how they were treated. From the first moment that they met the European whites up until the twentieth century. As a viewer you will meet a few of the leaders that tried to stop their vanishing way of life. You will also see how Native Americans keep their culture and way of life for future generations.
