    Peter Matthiessen's novel Shadow Country is an exhaustive and exhausting fictionalized biography of the life and times of one E.J. Watson, who pioneered the Florida Everglades around the turn of the nineteenth century. Being a combination of three previous books on the subject, which I haven't read, it is nearly 900 pages long, set in three parts, which most likely follow those three books, but I can't be certain. The first part is a Rashomanesque telling of Watson, and particularly his death at the hands of his neighbors following a devastating hurricane, by a great number of people who knew him or lived around him. Some of this is in the form of letters and diary entries, but most is in the form of short first person narratives. The second part is a long obsessive ...
