I've read all the basic Dune books written by Frank Herbert but recently found the time to read the ones written by his son, based on the research information and background notes from the estate of Frank Herbert and with the assistance of author Kevin Anderson and Herbert's wife. Many criticize the flow of the later novels, but the history (based on Frank's notes) behind the early history of the Galactic Empire and the war with the thinking machines is well documented. A lot of this trilogy serves to explain events that are critical to Dune, such as the fall of the first Galactic Empire, the origins of the Atredies-Harkonnen feud (did you know that Paul Atredis contained DNA from BOTH houses?), the nature of the "intelligent machines" and the eventual schism between the original Titans (human dictators that had their brains extracted and inserted into war machines) and the uber-machine Omnius (a networked intelligence that spanned hundreds of worlds) that sought to enslave humanity, and many other events. It may be boring to some, fascinating to others, but for those who want to appreciate the full range of Herbert's vision that was the backstory to the Dune trilogy this collection is crucial. I hope you'll find it as rewarding as I have. Read full review
