The Cream of the Crop
As a huge fan of David Lean's "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Bridge on the River Kwai" I thought that was all there was to his work in the modern era. But when I went looking for information on the 1970's Eric Carmen song "All By Myself", the Wikipedia entry mentions that the melody is from the same Rachmaninoff concerto as the old black-and-white film "Brief Encounter" uses as its love theme. Curious, I went looking into this film and found it was directed by none other than David Lean and, digging still more, I found that he had this whole body of black-and-white films form the World War II era I'd never heard of before. So I found "Blithe Spirit" at my local library and this led into "Brief Encounter" and, well, you get the idea. To make a long story short, these films are not only ... I consider them to be on par in terms of quality with any of the films of Akira Kurosawa and I only wish more Americans still knew of these films. PS: While you're at it, check out Charles Laughton in "Hobson's Choice" -- another one of David Lean's excellent directorial works, and I dare say possibly even more enjoyable than the films in this box set.
