You can't define the Kinks. They broke the rules and re-created rock and roll. This is not one of the Arista Albums (it's the last for reprise, I think), not is it the "Village Green Preservation Society", but "Lola" is a powerhouse album where Ray writes several songs indicting the Musician's Union, his management, and the record company. In some ways it's almost a companion to his descriptions of his travails in his "unauthorized biography" "X-Ray". I think Ray poured his heart and his soul into this album. Certainly it's one of his finest efforts. You can feel his frustration as he names names as he sings "The Money Go Round". His little brother Dave's "Rats" and "Strangers" give us a taste of the song writing talents that were all too absent in most Kinks albums. But it is the song "Lola" where he shines. It's clever, it rocks, and he became so fond of it that it was basically his signature piece--he continued performing it as the Kinks split and he did his Story Teller shows. This is an album you have got to have.Read full review
While many know The Kinks for their timeless '60s hits "You Really Got Me" and "All Day and All of the Night," the band released their best material during the better half of the '70s. "Lola vs. the Powerman and the Money-Go-Round" is the top of this aforementioned heap, featuring such classic hits as "Lola" and "Apeman" mixed with stellar album tracks like "Strangers" and "This Time Tomorrow." If you're looking for an album to kick-off your exploration of The Kinks, this album is a perfect place to start. You won't be disappointed.
This is a classic Kinks album with several great numbers. Some of the material doesn't stand up as well today. This era of the Kinks does have some of their best material. Although "Lola Versus.." had some US commercial air play, I think Muswell Hillbillies and especially Arthur or Village Green Preservation Society show the Kinks at their peak during last days of the Peace Generation.
Where was this CD the last 36 years of my life? I bought this after hearing Golden Smog cover "Strangers". Little did I know this CD would contain 14 gems! This CD ranges from the classic "Lola" to british pop sounding "Top of the Pops" to the rocking "Rats." Many different types of music on one CD.
Great blend of straight ahead rock with the offbeat Ray musichall tunes. A masterpiece.

In my opinion this album showcases The Kinks at the top of their game. You would be hard pressed to find anything wrong with this. Well known tracks like Lola and Apeman are matched by the greatness of This Time Tomorrow, Strangers, and Denmark Street. A must own for classic rock fans. 5 Huge Stars.
