The Japanese alternative
As a previous user and owner of several Hasselblad lenses I thought that they were the best in the market. Now I have found a very strong competitor with the lenses made by Mamiya for its RZ67 model. The high definitiuon, low or imperceptible distorsion, lack of aberrations of these lenses make the delight of any prhotographer. Add to this their quite reasonable price and the advantage of using only one filter size (77 mm) for any of them. Besides, they are more compact than the famous Zeiss lenses. I already owned three Mamiya-Sekor Z lenses (50mm, 110mm and 250mm for my Mamiya RZ Pro II, but I felt I needed the "normal" lens. After some quick calculations I found that the diagonal of the actual dimensions of the so called 6x7 negative was, precisely, 90 mm. I bought one in an auntion in ... I bought one in an auntion in eBay at a very affordable price and I received an almost mint lens that appears that has never been used or if it was only by a very careful user. The lens has a classical look with its simple design, where "less is more". However the body and the backs of the Mamiya RZ 67 have a clumsy look, far away from what we consider "beautiful". However, as "form follows function" I just close my eyes and ignore their unelegant look and try not to compare it with the beautiful body and backs designed by Victor Hasselblad more than 50 years ago, which look quite contemporary to my eyes. Still, the Mamiya RZ67 system is quite efficient and practical. What is its weakness? The weight! These are studio cameras, for the field I would prefer the lighter Mamiya 645 or the even lighter and much more beautiful Leica M6 or M7.
