When a male character in Christopher Scott Cherot's witty screwball comedy ''Hav Plenty'' asks a woman he has just met, ''What's your first impression?'' she retorts, ''I'll let you know when you impress me.'' The movie, an up-to-the-minute examination of the mating habits of well-heeled young black professionals in New York City, is packed with such snappy exchanges among competitive, upwardly mobile characters who, despite their vanity and self-absorption, are disarming in the vulnerability that occasionally leaks through the cracks of their brittle exteriors. The narrator and self-deprecating observer of this scene is an aspiring young novelist and screenwriter named Lee Plenty (Mr. Cherot), who is the only member of his group to have no money. Temporarily homeless and suffering from ... Beautiful, chic, haughty and avidly materialistic, Havilland, who works in publishing, is on the verge of becoming engaged to Michael Simmons (Hill Harper), a pop-soul singer and songwriter whose debut album, ''Love 40,'' has just gone platinum.Michael, whom some are hailing as ''the new Marvin Gaye,'' is so pleased with himself that he greets friends and fans alike with the same annoying little slogan, ''Hey! Love 40, baby!'' One of the songs on his record, whose lyrics Lee recites in a tone of mild derision, is a swatch of smarmy braggadocio called ''Crack Addict'' that's not about drugs. As the movie opens, Havilland has already caught Michael cheating once and has begun having serious doubts about their future. Lee happens to be Michael's polar opposite, an anomaly in a world of macho preening. He takes a self-effacing pleasure in announcing that he is broke and ''homeless'' and then gauging the revulsion that his admission incites. His statement that he doesn't date prompts some women to assume he must be gay. But Lee's air of exaggerated indifference exerts its own magnetism. And after joining Havilland and her family in Washington for New Year's Eve, he finds himself resisting the aggressive sexual overtures of four different women. ''Hav Plenty'' may be a featherweight social comedy without a political bone in its body, but its characters are refreshingly buoyant. Havilland, whom Ms. Maxwell embodies with a perfect mixture of heat and hauteur, is a woman who appears to have everything, including an attitude. And the movie shows you exactly how that attitude and the expectations that go with it can act as an impenetrable barrier to any real personal fulfillment. The funniest character is Havilland's brassy best friend, Caroline (Tammi Katherine Jones), who changes her hairdo every few hours and ludicrously lards her conversation with French phrases. Caroline is the kind of compulsively contrary person who, when reading a warning sign not to flush a toilet, immediately presses the lever to see what will happen, then afterward refuses to take the blame. But it is Lee, the filmmaker's obvious alter ego, who binds this froth into something that feels like a lighter-than-air hybrid of Woody Allen and Spike Lee. It turns out, of course, that despite his strenuous disapproval of her values, he has been in love with Havilland since college.

Funny and Romantic
There are not many romantic comedies that feature all-black casts that are presented well. This is one of them. The acting isn't that good. But it's a unique plot.

What I like about this movie is that it makes no assumptions that you're going to fall for the gimmicky boy meets girl, boy gets girl. You become amused by this struggling artist who can't seem to figure out why his best friend, Haviland (Hav), her sister, and her friend all find him attractive because they feel he is hard to get. It's not that he is hard to get, he just has nothing to offer...yet. Good movie if you have no expectations other than its your basic love story.What I like about this movie is that it makes no assumptions that you're going to fall for the gimmicky boy meets girl, boy gets girl. Great Movie
I first saw this movie early one morning on comedy central. I found it interesting so I decided to buy it. I would say I have watched it 20 times since I've purchased it. I like that its a movie with African Americans looked at in positive roles. The characters are all intellectual people, and the setting is an upper-class setting. I found the movie to be funny, and interesting. Its a great buy.

I love this movie. It is not your average love story and although some parts may be somewhat predictable you still wanna see it though to the end. There is not any major sexual content but a lot of sexual connections being made and implied in this movie.
