The company of heroes series can only be summarised with one word: EPIC. from the detailed units from WW2 to the intense style of game play, this is a must for any RTS fan. The campaign is awesome testing the strategical minds of all skill levels, allowing primary and secondary objectives to be met, as well as the ability to gain medals from tertiary (generally much more difficult) objectives. The campaigns follow particular sections of WW2, but also teach u how to play the game, very good training for online IMO. The multilayer portion has come a long way. Personally I have had COH since the original came out, back then you had auto-matches where you battled any random player on the globe, and generally only in 1 v 1. Now relic online has been established and you can interact with others fairly easily, however a few things leave a lot to be desired, such as; deadly high pings from some players (do note this is most likely from the players end of the deal). The multilayer portion of the game allows you to control one of four armies in one of two factions. There are the Axis, who's armies consist of the Wehrmacht and the Panzer Elite, and the Allies, who's armies consist of the U.S. and the British. Each army is completely different from any other, not only in the units you can build but how the tech tree works and the particular defensive structures they can build. The online aspect is all about strategy, unlike the normal RTS zerging rarely works. advanced features such as cover, on the fly defensive structures (sandbags, tank-traps, barbed-wire), positional damage on vehicles, squad based units, unique veterancy and upgrades. There is even a cool feature where if u are assaulting a set of engineers/pioneers that have a flamer you can sometimes hit the gas tank and the whole squad explodes much like what happened in ww2. In summary; if u want to be the master of a spam rush, go play cnc, this one is for real men. GGRead full review
In my opinion this is hands-down the best RTS ever made. Although the Opposing Fronts expansion considerably changes some things, it's still very good. I actually prefer just the original COH without the expansion, but the expansion adds some variety if nothing else, it's just a shame they combined them like that. Battles are very tactical, and there's a lot of different ways to play and win. Where this game really becomes fun is battling with friends either coop or versus, it doesn't matter because it's easy to balance the computer AI to make every game a challenge. The battles are grueling, and can last for hours, there's stalemates, and back-and-forth fighting as you gain and lose ground. You really have an opportunity to explore your different strategies as you play. The variety of units makes it so that every player can be fielding a completely different army, and the variety of Generals you can choose changes it even more. Even when I lose, I come out with a smile on my face, eager to get back in the fight with what I learned from the last battle. I've never even touched the campaign and I've been playing on and off for years. I keep coming back to this game because it's so fun. Highly recommended!Read full review
Another great RTS from Relic that perfectly combines strategy, tactics and adapting to a dynamic battlefield. The campaign is from the Allies perspective starting at The Invasion of Normandy. It's intriguing and absolutely captivating and even informative. The multiplayer portion is where the real fun is, and allows you to become a seasoned CoH player. Every map can be played in numerous ways with different strategies. This game isn't for everyone however; it does have a very steep learning curve and is ideal for the quick-paced, aggressive RTS vet. "Turtling" doesn't really work in this game, and every base defense has a counter. The expansion pack - Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts is included in this and helps expand the sides and adds 2 new faction that are very different from the 2 main factions in the original game. Overall, I think everyone should give it a try if they truly love RTS games especially the ones produced by Relic (Dawn of War, Homeworld) set in the atmosphere of WWII. One of the Best Original RTS games in a while.Read full review
Pro: Fast base game play, somewhat realistic story line. Great graphics. Con: Update/patch can be painful. Strong language and violence may not suit younger players. Verdict: One of the best PC games out there; must for military RPG/WWII fans. I became a big fan of the Company of Heroes (CoH) since I played the very first CoH back in 2007. Great game play, storyline, controllability and graphic made the first CoH game shines among other games with similar game play. THQ did not disappointed the CoH fans, released 2 more sequels, complete the CoH series. Game play/style remains same, but with more story, weapons and options, the great game became just an awesome, a must collection item for military RPG or WWII fans. There are tons of good things about this game. No need to write all pro's about this game since it proves itself by winning numerous awards from various places. The game indicates that it is no suitable for players under age 15 due to strong language and violence; which, I agree. However, the language fits the game play (just some occasional cursing and screaming from dying soldier) and violence is nothing horrifying that the kids will have nightmares, IMHO. Only complaint for the game is the patch/update file size is large and easily become painful process to update the game. Often the patching file does not recognized installation; had to re-install multiple times. Depends on the problems the solution may be slightly different; so anyone needs help, read through few forums about CoH update online. Overall, CoH is the great game, must collection item for anyone who enjoys RPG games in military fashion or in WWII storyline. I enjoyed the game thoroughly and strongly recommend to others.Read full review
This is a very well made game. Graphics are awesome, and I love the WWII setting. The sides are very well balanced, and there are so many different strategies you can use to defeat your opponents. I just love how the terrain is taken into consideration when in combat; you can actually give your characters more defense bonus if they take cover! What a concept! If you like RTS games, you HAVE TO BUY THIS ONE!
