This book is arguably the second best book written by Warren Ellis (the first being the Planetary omnibus, which I bought shortly before NextWave). Truth be told, I had previously read the first and second volumes last year when I checked them out of my local public library and greatly enjoyed them. I knew back then that I'd add NextWave to my collection when it was collected in a single volume. I'm glad that I was able to purchase a copy from eBay at a considerably lower price than retail. I was surprised yet pleased at the artistic diversity of Stuart Immonen. I noticed a somewhat more cartoony, animated style for most of the book combined with his regular art style and even a little Mignola in one of the chapters. Despite employing a number of different graphic styles, it wasn't disjointed or jarring. As for Warren Ellis, he was able to combine a whacked-out, gonzo sense of humor along with action and intrigue and managed to make a bunch of "D-list" supporting players interesting. I honestly don't believe this concept would've worked had it been entrusted to a lesser writer and artist. I was also surprised that this takes place in the regular Marvel Universe and pleased that this wasn't part of some event or crossover. I also give big points to this having taken place before "Marvel Now" and the latest version of "Secret War". This book shows that not every superhero story needs to always take itself so seriously and is one a refreshing change from the "grim & gritty", reconstructionist take on comics. I'm glad that Warren Ellis chose to embrace the inherent silliness of comics without being condescending or going on a "I hate mainstream superhero comics" subtext. Stuart Immonen matches the wackiness of Ellis and the result is a nice view of a mainstream superhero universe rarely seen. Even though this would be unsustainable for an ongoing book, I would love to see both Ellis and Immonen return for a followup to NextWave either using the same characters or use another cast of "D-list" heroes (or villains) for another entertaining romp through the Marvel Universe.Read full review
