About this product

Product Information

Directed by Hammer horror director Roy Ward Baker, this is another version of the tale of the doomed maiden voyage of the Titanic, told in a semi-documentary style through the eyes of the ship's second officer, Herbert Lightoller, whose duties provided him with a unique perspective of the everyday goings-on aboard the huge ocean liner. An excellent cast (selected for their resemblances to photos of the real passengers) conveys the courage, greed, fear, hope and despair of the real-life passengers. Based on the novel by Walter Lord.

  • Best movie about the Titanic

The effects aren't as snazzy as Cameron's knock-off some 39 years later, but huge production values for its time, and this is certainly the better of the two movies. Better casting, better direction, better acting, and historically more accurate, to the point of duplicating the suspect iceberg from 45-year-old old photographs! The black and white cinematography somehow feels more "right" for the topic, and B&W looks great even on old VHS. I never bought the contention that the ship broke in half before sinking - it was a surprise when discovered and no accounts of such from survivors who would most assuredly have remembered seeing something like that.

  • A Night to Remember VHS

Maybe the original Titanic movie and certainly the best done. Very realistic and told in the third person. Being done in black and white only makes it better. If you're into the Titanic, you have to see this VHS.
