good start, but then starts to drag its feet
Having recently purchased this cd finally because of 3 or 4 good songs on it reminded me of why I didn't buy it immediately upon its arrival. There are the 4 good songs on it so I guess that makes it worthy of a 'good' rating, although with some reservations. This is the first main release from the band, which quickly vaulted them into stardom, mostly because of the popularity of the concert staple Rock the Party. This party song alone probably makes the cd worthwhile. Looking back, this is their most preachy cd. Its hardcore message is certainly as hardcore as its sound. This cd has creative and noisey guitars, a big sound with variances in vocalization and some sweet beats. This rapcore metal band has amazing talent all around. Freestyle offers the only unpredictable internal speed change, which does become somewhat customary in later years. While later disks stray from the rapcore sound here, this cd still has much to offer. While the sound effects might seem cool initially, they sometimes serve as filler, a cover of sorts. Without such noisy additions, this cd might seem quite repetitive then. There is also more screamo on this cd, at least more regularly throughout it. The guitar pedal is pumped often as the distortion is controlled as if by a master. There is also way more scratching for those of you that are rappers. The title track is a midtempo headbanger expressing the pride of the street. Hollywood starts to drag after a few listens though. Checkin' Levels is plain rap. Set Your Eyes to Zion is a slow-grooving reggae masterpiece. Bullet the Blue Sky is a sweet U2 cover that hints further at their creative potential. Follow Me is an iambic nightmare, not that poetry has to rhyme. There are also some classical Latin guitar interludes dispersed periodically and a cool jazzy number at the end of Outkast. While their cover art is odd, there is much symbolism for discussing. Compared to their follow up cds, especially Satellite, this cd is probably 'average'. In comparison with others of this genre, it is pretty good. These guys have an unusual integrity in the music industry and an authenticity that is refreshing.

It wasnt really one of my favorite cds, but it did have a couple good songs on it that i liked... or maybe a few that i liked.. i listen to it time to time, but not too much, that way i dont overdue it and end up overplaying my favorites. If your a big POD fan i would say its a must, but if you just like a couple songs... its still a good buy. it was good beginning to end, catchy guitars, plus sunni's vocals. this particular cd has the popular song that was played Numerous times on MTV: Rock the Party (all night long). but also has a cool song that to my knowledge never had air time called: "Set your eyes to Zion" i liked that song alot and surprisingly it never made it a whole lot to the air waves... Not bad, not great
Being their first major label CD but certainly not being their first, i'd say it's just Ok for me. Some would disagree and hail this CD as one of the greats, but they made a huge leap when they dished out "Satelite" and beyond, so I don't understand how "Fundamentals" was so mediocre. Again it's not bad and there's some tunes I pop it in for, namely "Southtown", "Set your eyes to Zion" and the U2 cover of "Bullet the Blue sky". One defining thing about this L.A. band though is their religous overtones. They get pretty hardcore, but the lyrics focus on Christianity. You'd never know it listening to some of their jams. The fundamental elements of POD: this album, the others miss the mark of southtown. Prepare to get lifted to another level as the heartfelt tracks resonate with life in every chord and beat. You can tell there was some serious heart and soul poured into this album. Bullett the blue sky, hollywood, and southtown are the best of the best.
