In the tradition of Resident Evil and Devil May Cry comes The Suffering, a survival horror game set in a haunted penitentiary. Players must not only confront the spirits of executed inmates while advancing through the game's nine levels, but also fellow criminals on death row, prison guards, and other characters. The 12 supernatural creatures in the game were designed by the legendary Stan Winston, best known for his Academy Award-winning work in Aliens, Jurassic Park, and A.I. Players are cast in the role of a troubled inmate named Torque, who has been condemned to death for a crime he may or may not have committed.<br><br>When the spirits of the prison inadvertently free him from captivity, Torque begins a grueling quest for survival as he uncovers the clues to make sense of his bewildering past. To battle his grotesque foes, Torque can find and use ten different weapons, ranging from revolvers to Tommy guns. The protagonist also hides a dark secret that allows him to transform into a superhuman creature when pushed too far, at which point he can unleash his pent-up rage for a limited time. Levels are set within prison walls as well as outdoor surroundings, as enemies attack from jail cells, torture chambers, underneath the ground, from behind trees, and more. During the game, players can make certain decisions that will eventually lead to one of three possible endings.

Resident What? The Suffering is the New Face of Horror!
The Suffering is a crazy horror/psychological thriller that really redefine the survival horror video game genre and could be the reason Resident Evil 4 broke away from its predecessors. The Suffering is about a man who is in jail and is facing his own personal demons, when one night, real demons manage to inhabit the island on which the jail is contained. I don't want to give away stuff that ruins the story because it's such a good one, but as he tries to escape he is haunted by the images of his dead family - there, that's all I'll say about that, because if I get into detail about that aspect of the game, the story is ruined for you. What's great about this game is that it's full of action and it has the ocassional puzzle. If you've played Resident Evil 4 or at least know of its ... If you've played Resident Evil 4 or at least know of its schematics, then you can relate that with The Suffering. There's a lot of running around different buildings and parts of the island, killing of a whole slew of different monsters. The monsters in this game are purely AWESOME. First off, they're created by Stan Winston studios - the guy who did movie monsters like the Jurassic Park dinosaurs and The Predator movie. Each monster represents a different form of execution or death; there will be the monster who drops from the ceiling by a noose, the monster that has numerous lethal injection needles stuck in him that he throws at you, the monster made entirely of blades....there are numerous monsters in this game and are all so unique. Plus, as you go, you'll write a journal to record the different monsters you encounter and it will give a bit of information on them. You'll also record different places and people on the island that gives you more information on the entire story at hand. So you'll be running around the island, guns in hand, blowing up pretty much anything that moves...but ocassionally there will be little puzzles for you to solve. The puzzles aren't anything major like you would expect from an early Resident Evil title, but they're still there. The puzzles might involve moving a light in a certain direction to scare monsters or blowing something up to create a new path, etc. Also, as part of the psychological thriller, you have a special attack that allows you to turn into a monster. When you change into the monster, you basically only have one attack and that is like a slash attack with your hands. The monster is a cool idea, but the controls are fairly poor in this game (they were drastically improved in the sequel) - this is really the only downside to this game. What's great about the monster is that the story hints that you really don't know if you change into a monster, or if you're just going psycho as yourself; like I said, the story is really intense. The last component worth mentioning is that there is a tiny bit of RPG involved - it's nothing major, it's just that some points of the game will require you to make a decision: good or bad. The decisions might be leaving someone to die in the hands of the monsters or save them. Another decision could be to let someone take you somewhere or just kill them to spare yourself the pain of following them around and trying to protect them or because you don't want to trust them. It's great making these decisions because you'll hear voices trying to con you into doing one or the other. All around it's a great game, great graphics, great story...see what I mean? It's great! It is mature, so be forewarned, because there is a hefty amount of gore.

With a tough character like Torque you rarely feel so scared in the 3rd person mode but switch to 1st person and things come after you lightning fast. You have to find out what has happened in your past. Throughout the game you make choices like deciding to either help or kill people. Helping is much nicer and killing them really makes the game feel empty/lonely like a real killer should feel. The game stays creepy throughout and is about 7-9 hours in length. The story blends elements from the past like slave ships, World War II ghosts, and a mental institution. The graphics are slick and some of the best on any game. Old school fun!
I played this back in 04 or 05 when it released and really enjoyed it! With that said it is 2018 and games have come a long way but it's still fun to go back and play.
