About this product

Product Information

A Special Hardcover Edition to Commemorate the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Publication of Sylvia Plath's Remarkable Novel Sylvia Plath's shocking, realistic, and intensely emotional novel about a woman falling into the grip of insanity Esther Greenwood is brilliant, beautiful, enormously talented, and successful, but slowly going under maybe for the last time. In her acclaimed and enduring masterwork, Sylvia Plath brilliantly draws the reader into Esther's breakdown with such intensity that her insanity becomes palpably real, even rational as accessible an experience as going to the movies. A deep penetration into the darkest and most harrowing corners of the human psyche, The Bell Jar is an extraordinary accomplishment and a haunting American classic. "

  • Worth your time.

It was a fascinating tale written by a very bright young woman. her description of her descent into madness and all the misery of being stuck in a mental institution, her eventual recovery (sort of) her marriage to a no-goodnik was very compelling. I thought what a waste. I have never contemplated suicide but have barely restrained myself from shooting numerous a-holes I met along the way who richly deserved it. The book was a very good read. Poor Sylvia.

  • So happy with this order!

I read this book last year and LOVED it. This book is so real and it pulls you into every chapter. I wanted to buy it but I hate paperback books. Everywhere else I looked the book was almost $30 and I didn't want to pay that(I don't even pay that much for shoes) but I decided to take a chance and pay $18. It was so worth it! It shipped fast and the book is in excellent condition. They even have me a bookmark to go with it!! Buy your books here. They're awesome!!

  • the most striking, haunting book i've ever read.

It's hard to not be obsessed by this book. It's alot of psychology...thinly veiled autobiography. the honesty is what got me. It's hard to admit that you have psychological disorders...let alone write, in detail about trying to kill yourself and your obsessions. THe main character, Esther, is a great medium to learn about Plath. Her writing is impeccable and when I first read it, I wished she had lived to write more prose. It's a beautiful and stunning piece of work. Just as pleasing to hear and read as her poetry. If you like emotional work, if you can handle raw hate and despair, you need to read this. It changed my writing style. If you're a writer, you REALLY need to read this.

  • Losing it with Sylvia

No one does a better job of describing the descent into insanity than a poet... who has gone insane. And if that poet happens to be the master of metaphors herself, well then you've got a real treat. The imagery in this book rocked my world. Some call it prose, I call it a novel, but either way it's a masterpiece by Sylvia Plath. Sylvia Plath, for god's sake.

  • my daughter requested this book
