Described as a pint-sized preamp with anything but a pint-sized sound, the Studio V3 preamp comes packed with features such as tonal enhancements for optimizing your music art and recording experience. The primary function of a preamp is to prepare the signal that comes through from a pickup or microphones for further amplification. Some preamps produce a fuzzy and flaky sound and do not make for good recording. The ART Tube MP Studio V3 picks up and optimizes a low signal, bringing it up to line level so that a clear, distinct sound is delivered to the recording device (e.g., a mixing board or sound input on a computer) into which the preamp is plugged. A good preamp such as the Studio V3 cleans up a signal so that it sounds better as it comes through the amp equipment. Adding the right accessories helps to enhance the performance of your studio collection. Optimize your microphone gear with the ART Tube MP Studio V3 Mic Preamp, and enjoy high sound quality for your recording. The V3 presets (Variable Valve Voicing) technology presents you with varying preset options for your instruments: guitars (electric and acoustic), bass guitars, drums, keyboards, vocals (warmth), multi, valve, and more. The fine-tuned presets serve as reference points for you to begin recording. Another feature, the Output Protection Limiter (OPL), allows you to accurately control and maintain the output peak signal to gain consistency and stability. This is especially important when recording is being done on a hard disk or when using a sound card. At a very healthy +28dBu, recording capabilities satisfy even the most demanding soundcard input. Accessories such as cables and filters are easily accessible. To the right of the meter is a rotary control with 15 different switchable voicings (preset voicings, mentioned above). Each voicing uses varying levels of limiting, tube warmth, and subtle EQ. The dynamic range of the unit is 100 dB, while the frequency response is 10 Hz to 20 kHz. Recording with the Studio V3 amps is like using several different mics to inject your own style and character to produce pro-quality recordings. The preamp is pretty much a direct box for impedance matching, amplifying, and improving the sound of the instruments connected to it. This item is certainly a cut above the stock. The Studio V3 Preamp is a low-voltage tube circuit but proves to be a very good matchup to the elite models that use high-voltage tube circuitry and for only a fraction of the price. It is definitely a top-of-the-class preamp when it comes to small mixers in its category. The Tube MP Studio V3’s high output drive capability and tonal versatility make it an excellent companion for your digital desktop studio. While it primarily functions as a microphone preamp with a phantom power of +48V along with variable gain and phase reverse switching capabilities, your Studio V3 Preamp is also an excellent tube direct box for your musical instruments and line level sources. It is a link in the chain of musical gear (guitar, keyboards, etc.) needed for music production. The preamp does an excellent job on direct bass recording and features a phase reverse switch, XLR, and separate 1/4-inch jack input and output gain controls to adjust the sounds of your instruments. Quiet and Warm Little Preamp
This little beauty adds some nice tube warmth and volume to your mic, and it does so for a very reasonable price. It's well-built and is actually pretty quiet. In fact, I use one on my acoustic guitar, as well. The different "tone" settings on this particular version also give you some decent voicing options before you even get to your main mixer or EQ. A word of warning: these ART mic preamps use a 9V AC to AC (700-1000 mA) type power transformer, whereas most 9V pedal transformers are AC to DC. Make sure any transformer included with a used ART mic pre has the proper configuration before you buy, and realize that if you have an old "wall wart" hanging around your studio, it probably isn't well-suited for this type of preamp.This little beauty adds some nice tube warmth and volume to your mic, and it does so for a very reasonable price. Bought used, but there are reliability issues. :-(
This is the third ART DI box I have purchased (the other two I have were the original issue). I was hoping that the reliability issues I had with one of the two boxes I originally purchased had been resolved, but apparently not. In fairness, I bought this unit used, so I do not know if these issues existed when new or not. There is a lot more to this DI than the ones originally sold, and I have yet to put it through its paces with other audio sources. I love the addition of the meter (although there are some mysteries as to exactly how to interpret it). I also love that there are some subtleties with the rotator dial regarding the EQ of the input! So far, I have only put an electric guitar into it, and have yet to try it as a microphone DI -- I look forward to doing so in the near ... But when I brought it to church to use as a DI for a guitar, when I plugged it into the PA system via XLR cable out, the meter pegged (all the way to the right), and there was no sound! I tried a couple times, and it would peg every time I plugged in the line out via XLR. When I tried it out at home, I used it with the 1/4" line, and also had some problems with "pretend" audio -- LED showed overmodulation, but did not get sound. Again, in fairness, it acts strangely until the tube (12AX7) warmed up. After a minute or two, the unit settled down. This DI has potential -- I just hope that others work more reliably than mine has so far. But again, this is a used unit, and I need to work it over some more, to see if it's the design, or just that it may have a lot of miles on it.
