The item arrived not fully assembled (the internals were not screwed down as they were supposed to be) and the unit must have been dropped or something because the central part of the fan (the blades) were pushed out of place. I screwed the internals down and fixed the fan. The unit seems to work just fine since then, for about a month now, but I wasn't expecting to have to fix or assemble the unit before using it.
