Synopsis
An illuminating, erudite, lively search for the real Helen of Troyua chronicle that combines historical inquiry and storytelling ela -from one of BritainAEs most widely acclaimed and popular historians. As soon as men began to write, they made Helen of Troy their subject; for close to three thousand years she has been both the embodiment of absolute female beauty and a reminder of the terrible power that beauty can wield. Because of her double marriage to the Greek king Menelaus and the Trojan prince Paris, Helen was held responsible for an enduring enmity between East and West. For millennia she has been viewed as an exquisite agent of extermination. But who was she? Helen exists in many guises: a matriarch from the Age of Heroes who ruled over one of the most fertile areas of the Mycenaean world; Helen of Sparta, the focus of a cult that conflated Helen the heroine with a pre-Greek fertility goddess; the home-wrecker of the Iliad; the bitch-whore of Greek tragedy; the pin-up of Romantic artists. Focusing on the orealo Hele -a flesh-and-blood aristocrat from the Greek Bronze Ag -Bettany Hughes reconstructs the context of life for this pre-historic princess. Through the eyes of a young Mycenaean woman, Hughes examines the physical, historical, and cultural traces that Helen has left on locations in Greece, North Africa, and Asia Minor. Vivid and compelling, this remarkable book brilliantly unpacks the facts and myths surrounding one of the most enigmatic and notorious figures of all time., An illuminating, erudite, lively search for the real Helen of Troya chronicle that combines historical inquiry and storytelling élanfrom one of Britain's most widely acclaimed and popular historians. Fast shipping, great price, wonderful packaging, arrived as pictured and described, excellent seller! My parents went to the Hotel Claremont on their wedding night in 1947! I have the picture, and now I have the folder that goes with it! Many thanks!

Shipping and packaging were outstanding: prompt delivery with padded envelope and interior cardboard on each side of the stamp collection. Stamp collection is as described and is in mint condition. The original plastic wrap is unopened but has shrunk somewhat which is common. In my opinion this is a good value. Also, thanks for the receipt which for some reason some sellers neglect.

Shipped much faster than I thought, and came in great packaging. Was described well, although one of the pages was torn out, but I reckon that could be my mistake. Definitely was priced perfectly ❤️

  • All about Helen of Sparta/Troy

Bettany Hughes has written a very well-researched book using many historical findings (many recent) to flesh out a woman of the Late Bronze Age. At this time the Greeks weren't yet Greeks, but went by other city-state names. Helen supposedly was the most beautiful woman in the known world during this time and her fame was proudly held up by the ancient Greeks. Some scholars think Helen didn't really exist, but Hughes has much convincing evidence to the contrary. If you're interested in ancient Greek history (actually pre-history), find a copy of this book and jump in.
