Reviews
The UHMWPE Handbook is a comprehensive yet concise presentation of the important role that polyethylene has played and continues to play in the treatment armamentarium of the orthopaedic surgeonthe subject matter gives the reader an excellent overview of the field that will stimulate further reading and research. Portions of this book will be of great interest to orthopaedic residents and surgeons, providing them with a basic framework to understand the performance of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene in a variety of clinical settings, including arthroplasty of the hip, knee, shoulder, and disc. This book should be read by individuals who are involved in clinical and basic research involving polyethylene performance as well as by biomedical engineering trainees who intend to pursue a career in the orthopaedic device industry. The author and his colleagues are to be commended for compiling this information and producing an authoritative and useful resource for our speciality The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery

Synopsis
Artificial hip, shoulder and other joint replacements are routine surgical procedures. The material used for these joints is overwhelmingly comprised in part of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene or UHMWPE. This book describes the origins, theory, applications, properties and latest developments of UHMWPE., Recently, the orthopedic industry developed new processing techniques (radiation crosslinking), which are expected to dramatically reduce wear and improve the longevity of hip implants beyond 10 years. This book describes the history and properties of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) used in artificial joints by describing its properties and reviewing the latest clinical results., Each year, over 1 million patients around the world are implanted with artificial hip and knee joints: Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is used as the bearing material in the vast majority of these total joint replacements. Although the use of UHMWPE has proven to be very successful over the past four decades, the longevity of joint reconstructions may be limited to around 10 years. Continuous enhancement of UHMWPE biomaterials is necessary to improve the long-term performance of joint replacements. The 15 chapters of The UHMWPE Handbook describe the history, properties, and clinical performance of biomaterials used for joint replacement, and provides the key to understanding the world literature of UHMWPE and joint replacement. The historical and contemporary references to implant biomaterials for the hip and knee are reviewed in detail. The clinical application of UHMWPE is covered comprehensively. Not only are hip and knee replacement performance reviewed, but also emerging fields of joint replacement, including shoulder and disc replacement surgery, are discussed in dedicated chapters. State-of-the-art alternative bearing technologies for joint replacements are reviewed. Chapters are devoted to ceramic-on-ceramic, metal-on-metal, and highly crosslinked UHMWPE materials in hip and knee replacement. Each chapter concludes with reading comprehension questions, to aid in undergraduate or graduate instruction. The UHMWPE Handbook is the comprehensive reference for students, researchers, and surgeons interested in biomaterials technologies for total joint replacement surgery. Book jacket.
