    Excellent transfers in Blu-ray

    Very spectacular box set, "Play Time" has never looked better on any home media... The usual thoughtfully produced packaging from Criterion, also contains pretty much all of Tati's short films as well as some interesting extra materials. It's not an expensive however it's certainly worth every penny to see a cinematic master at work.

    A film course in a box

    Many of the best film makers cite Tati as their idol and inspiration. These movies bear watching several times, for the amazing physical gags, palette and mis en scene. Look carefully at "Playtime," wherein Tati pokes modern society in the eye. Notice the background- He placed live extras conversing with lifesize cutouts of people- very clever, and way cheaper than live extras! Observe the camera angles, shots of traffic straight down from above, creating a puzzle effect. Tati took a technique from W.C. Fields- Mr. Hulot, the bumbling mischief maker is often admired by a young woman who has figured him out and knows he is not a fool, rather smirking at the pomposity of society. If you consider yourself adroit about films, you better watch this collection- closely.

    A rare treat for Tati completists

    A complete collection of the hard-to-find works of Jacques Tati, including his rare shorts, and some documentaries too. There are the complete films of the earlier and final versions of Mr. Hulot's Holiday, the Jour de Fete with restored color, and in some cases rewritten subtitles. Hard to think of anything else they could have added.
