About this product

Product Information

Texan filmmaker Richard Linklater's debut independent feature takes an original approach to traditional narrative, creating an entirely new form of cinema in the process. Shot at a leisurely pace with a style similar to Robert Bresson, SLACKER follows the unmotivated inhabitants of Austin, Texas, over the course of one day, as they waste their time talking about politics, philosophy, and popular culture. Beginning with a cab ride in which the fare (Linklater himself) suggests to the driver a theory about alternate universes (which also happens to mirror what transpires on screen), the film abruptly shifts to another character and situation after an elderly woman is hit by a car. Soon after, another character is introduced, and the camera follows her. This formula sticks for the whole film; by the end, dozens of characters have been introduced and, just as quickly, been left behind. Linklater spent years taking notes in order to infuse original dialogue into every situation, which results in a sometimes pathetic, sometimes poignant, always amusing trip into a lackadaisical college town. Luckily, for fans of new and inventive approaches to filmmaking, Linklater himself wasn't a "slacker," ensuring the film's place in indie film history.

  • Love, love, LOVE this movie!

Slacker was and is one of the formative films of my teenage experience. I picked it up out of curiosity when I was, um, maybe 14, and immediately fell in love with it, buying the accompanying book (with intro by Douglas Coupland) and watching it several times per week. The meandering progression of events (I won't say plot; there is none) and quasi-philosophical leanings of the conversations really shaped my idea of what life could be at a time when I was completely amiss as to how I was supposed to "fit in" to regular society. Richard Linklater's ensemble films tend to showcase what people think rather than how they think. He is primarily concerned with how people see the world, rather than their motives, which gives films like Slacker (and Waking Life, Dazed and Confused, Before Sunrise et al, and to a lesser degree films like Bernie) a nonjudgmental view of many types of odd people, giving them room to breathe. This Criterion Collection edition contains a 64-page booklet with essays about the film: it's production, it's release and reception. There are, of course, the usual "extras," like casting tapes, stills, and such, but there is also a copy of Linklater's first film "It's Impossible to Learn to Plow by Reading Books," which is an interesting if not entirely engaging precursor to Slacker. The dream of the 90s may be alive in Portland, but the birth of the 90s was chronicled in Slacker.
