Powered by Cisco’s standard multilayer software image (SMI), the Catalyst 3550-48-SMI switch forms part of the innovative Cisco Catalyst series of multilayer network switches that provide intelligence to the metro access edge. The SMI feature set encompasses a wide range of standards-based protocols and mechanisms, including enhanced quality of service (QoS), basic state and RIP routing functionality, access control lists (ACLs), and rate limiting. With its high-density 48-port configuration and optional gigabit Ethernet uplinks, the Catalyst 3550-48 gives you plenty of connectivity options for your multiple devices, including computers, consoles, servers, printers, and storage hardware. Offering an outstanding switching fabric of 13.6 gigabits per second, the Cisco Catalyst 3550-48 provides a higher total throughput by propagating network traffic across multiple physical links. Embedded with 48 RJ-45 Ethernet ports, this unit automatically switches to the correct speed and duplex mode to ensure optimized performance throughout your local area network (LAN). Seamlessly integrate devices that transmit at either 10 or 100 megabits per second without having to worry about interoperability. The Cisco Catalyst 3550-48 also comes with 2GB interface converter (GBIC)-based gigabit Ethernet ports for additional connectivity that extends to fiber optics. You can easily avail of a variety of GBIC transceivers that can work with these ports, including GigaStack, 1000BaseT, 1000BaseSX, and 1000BaseLX/LH modules. The Cisco Catalyst 3550-48 model implements tunneling, enhanced QoS, and rate limiting that support layer 2 to 4 functionalities. Tunneling lets you create Layer 2 transparent LAN services, which enable transparent communications with other metro sites via a service provider network as if the transmission is occurring within the same corporate LAN. Layer 3 granular QoS features manage traffic by classifying, prioritizing, and avoiding congestion to ensure data transfer efficiency. In combination with rate limiting features, QoS paves the way for the convergence of video, voice, and data into a single unified platform. To prevent unauthorized access to vital business information and to keep your digital environment safe from potential attacks, the Cisco Catalyst 3550-48 switch enforces a series of advanced security features through ACLs, console security, port-based authentication, and a dynamic host configuration protocol interface tracker. Moreover, this unit also supports port security with a media access control (MAC) address to restrict the number of MAC addresses allowed per port. This Cisco Catalyst switch offers great programmability and manageability for you to monitor, control, and maintain your LAN’s performance quickly. It comes with integrated support for the Cisco IE 2100 series intelligence engine, which provides a task-oriented Web-based interface, configuration template management, and a built-in repository.     GREAT SWITCH

    I WAS HESITANT TO DO THIS AS I DIDN'T UTILIZE THIS DEVICE AS SOON AS IT ARRIVED, BUT I HAVE PUT POWER TO THE DEVICE AND IT SEEMS TO FUNCTION AS IT WAS SUPPOSE TO. THE ITEM IS USED AND SHOWS SIGNS OF WEAR BUT NOT ABUSE. THE PLASTIC HAS A BREAK IN THE FRONT THAT HAS NO EFFECT ON THE ABILITY OF THE UNIT TO OPERATE AS IT WAS DESIGNED. ALL IN ALL IT WAS A GREAT BARGAIN FROM THE STANDPOINT THAT IT IS USED AND FULLY FUNCTIONAL. THE COMPANY WAS VERY PROMPT TO CONTACT ME AFTER THE PURCHASE TO SEE IF I WAS PLEASED WITH MY PURCHASE AND UNTIL NOW I HADN'T CHECKED THE SWITCH FOR OPPERATION, BUT IT SEEMS TO BE GRADE "A" ON FUNCTIONALITY.
