Is it a WESTERN or a HORROR FILM or a MYSTERY? Well...ALL OF THE ABOVE!

Gun play, period costume, and the setting suggest that this is a WESTERN. But, the plot is a MYSTERY...one of those "who-dun-its" that takes place in a large, snowed-in stagecoach station known as "Minnie's Haberdashery." Sorting the mystery out requires frequent, extreme, graphic violence, as one-by-one, suspects and characters are literally "eliminated" from the story. The resulting GORE (bloodshed is too mild a descriptor) is where the movie turns HORROR film, complete with a witch right out of "Macbeth.". Samuel L. Jackson launches into a TOO-LONG, TOO-DISGUSTING, and TOO-PROFANE monologue lasting MANY minutes, which seem like hours, merely to provoke another character into drawing his gun. This grotesque, profane monologue, itself, would discourage many from viewing (listening to) the movie more than once. In the end, a rather clever movie ends up feeling exhausting more than entertaining. Not the thing to draw frequent, repeat viewers.

  • Top critical review

    Not a good story line.

I was excited to see this movie with all the great actors but was very disappointed from the beginning. The story line was so slow and didn't make a lot of sense from the beginning. It was pretty gruesome and the language was filthy. Overall I was just not happy with the movie period. I would not watch it again nor would I recommend it to anyone. This is my opinion only, others may have loved it??

  • Outstanding!

This movie is engaging from the very beginning up until the final minute! The suspenseful intriquing plot and excellent top star actors/ actress make this one of the best western/action/suspense films EVER produced! So many movies made in the last 10 years that while watching your mind will wander to other thoughts because they are unoriginal, use worn out themes and lack in quality, nothing that focuses your mind to be intrigued!! The Hateful Eight will not disappoint you. 5 stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟

  • The Hateful Eight movie

Not as good as Django. I watch Tarantino because he often has a good moral to the story. This one missed although it certainly had a moral.

  • The Hateful Eight

Believe me when I tell you this is NOT the old John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, William Holden style Western. This isn't even the, everyone's a bad guy, new style of Western. This is a Quentin Tarantino, everyone is a terribly bad guy, (and or gal), foul mouthed, politically incorrect and just about any other nasty thing a person can be, type of Western. Bruce Dern is in it, but he has been in every Western ever made so it's only fitting he's in this one. And he is great in this one as is everyone else in the cast. Kurt Russell was born to be in westerns and Samuel l Jackson and Tim Roth should be in more westerns but they don't make them anymore. And then there was Jennifer Jason Leigh whose character was despicable and hilarious at the same time. I knew I shouldn't but I couldn't help but laugh every time she spewed out some nastiness. She was hilarious. Plus the whole cast was very well chosen. This was very very long movie, not quite 3 hours. There was a lot of long-winded dialogue, but in the middle of that long windedness there would be a one liner that was great. Plus I personally thought that the long-windedness really helped to round out the characters. But when the real action started, that is the gruesome bloodletting that Tarantino is so noted for, it is Non-Stop. If you are queasy around blood you definitely do not want to see this because blood flies and spews everywhere. None of the characters are spared from the bloodletting and there was even a head that exploded and disappeared. Well I guess I just gave away and spoiled the whole movie. I like westerns, old style or new style and I really really liked this one even though it was really long winded like me.

  • Fast Three Hour Movie

To be honest...I'm a big fan of director Quentin Tarantino. I loved all his movies and the "Hateful Eight" didn't change that one bit. The movie was what I expected. Great dialog..great actors...great scenes. The first part taken pretty much in the stage coach was mostly dialog but didn't drag. With the three main actors in the coach the dialog was totally interesting. I've also been a fan of Kurt Russell from when he was a kid. Whether a western or plays a bad cop he always delivers. I see every movie (hell, I own most of all his dvd's) he stars in. The "8" has a simple story line, which I enjoy. Towards the end, where the true action complete w/a gory scene, is played out, holds you at the edge of your seat. Tarantino delivers to us one of the best westerns in a long time. There is a scene in a flash back where Samuel L. Jackson is walking a man at gunpoint in the snow that will make your jaw drop as he relates to Bruce Dern what is happening. The majority of movie takes place in an old store, where again, the dialog takes over and holds your interest every minute. If your the type that is offended by the "N" word, blood and gore then this movie isn't for you. But if you like westerns with great writing, actors, shoot outs etc. then don't miss "The Hateful Eight". I've seen it three times and now own the dvd.

  • Reservoir Dogs as a Western, classic Tarantino film!

This movie is great. It has a great script, good characters, and wonderful twists. I felt like I was watching a game of "Clue" in 19th century outlaw Wyoming. If you like Tarantino films, you'll be pleased. I can't say it's his best, or even better than his previous film, but this movie adds to Tarantino's catalog rather than dilute it.

  • "Hateful Eight" accurately describes the film's characters.

The movie is worth watching though some of the scenes might not be suitable for pre-teenagers. The cinematography is fabulous and Jennifer Jason Leigh had an Oscar-worthy performance.
