Good remote and easy to use, but programming software has some tricks

I received the Harmony 700 remote and explored the website before attempting to program it. Initially, I ran into a problem with the software allowing me to register, then saying "stop and save". The website indicated that some firewalls might prevent the software from operating, so disabled them with no change. I then went to options in Google, and found that I had to activate an option in Google for the program to work. This is something that new users should know, as it is not explained in the Harmony program. Once this was accomplished, everything went smoothly, adding devices and programming i/o's. The only deviation was not having an optical audio input listed for my Pioneer Elite receiver. However, once I established the exact name for the input, I was able to add it to the i/o list for the receiver and program it for the CD music function of my CD/DVD player. Overall, programming was easy and the normal function assignments were fine for my applications. Using the remote itself requires getting familiar with the controls and displays, but is not difficult. My wife, who is not technically inclined learned to use it easily. Being able to activate the appropriate devices with a function button really appeals to her. It also works through the glass in my equipment cabinet, which a plus in not having to purchase (and install) an IR/RF repeater for several hundred dollars.

    Bad Software for Windows 7x64

Everything about this remote is OK until you get to programing your devices with their software. The problem is that on Window 7x64 the software will not completely load so that you can program the remote, I spent more than an hour on the phone with Logitech support personnel and the best they could come up with as to why I continue to get a application fail to load and is shutting down on two different computer running windows 7 is to call Microsoft because there is some type of security in my installs that's preventing the software from loading., That may not seem bad until you consider that as far back as 2007 people running window 7 were having the exact same issue with the software failing to completely load, you would think after all that time with this issue they would have pinpointed the cause of this issue and not tell you to go to Microsoft for the solution. If the software doesn't work the remote is worthless. To me that make their remote worthless to a lot of window7 users. Did I mention there is no mention of compatibility problems with window anywhere. So anyone who buys this remote better have a few computers as a back up.

  • Great upgrade from the 650 with rechargeable battery!

I've had a few Harmony remotes, and I have gotten used to the layout of the 650. I was looking to replace it, and ran across the 700 - even better! Same remote, but nice USB recharging. I run a whole bunch of devices through this remote, and it's so simple to program, too. If it's the first time, you just tell it your devices, and go through the list of what you want turned on and configured for each activity. (i.e. for "Watch TV", I want my TV turned on and set to input 1, my Dish DVR on, my Amp on and set to my Dish input). Then one button turns your other stuff off, and that stuff on. And if you switch (say, to BluRay player, it knows that your TV is already on, so it switches to Input 2, switches your Amp to the BluRay input, and turns off your Dish DVR). If you've had a harmony remote configured in the past, and you're upgrading, you just tell their software your new remote, and it will load all your programs into the new remote without you having to re-program everything. These remotes make my fairly complicated A/V setup accessible to my wife who doesn't like too many buttons, too ;-)

  • Overall quite decent

I like this much better than the 880 it replaced. The buttons have a nice soft rubbery feel, and the back light is great and very readable. I don't like that the top 5 function buttons are not backlit however. Also, the "all off" button is hit or miss and this has been a universal complaint. I often have to press it many many times to power down all the devices. But overall with day-to-day use, the buttons and backlight do the job nicely. Next time I will opt for the non-rechargeable 650 and just get a couple quick-charge nicads. Even though this is rechargeable, and it comes with the usb cord, you still need to find a power supply like those cellphone wall-warts.

  • Excellent remote with a couple of caveats

This remote has replaced several OEM remotes and eliminated a lot of the hassle for me. However, there are a couple of minor things that prevent this from being a five-star review. First, the command delay on individual devices can only be set to a maximum of 5 seconds. Modern home entertainment components often take longer than that to boot up upon initial powering on. So, when activating a macro, you will often be left using the remote assistant to get the inputs all "on the same page" for your chosen activity. Second, is missing commands. Some models of equipment, in this case a Pioneer SC-55, will be missing commands in the setup wizard. However, picking another model, a Pioneer SC-65, revealed the needed commands for a macro I was putting together. It was something that I, a moderately experienced HiFi geek, could figure out. However, many consumers would be forced to search the web for a solution, or give up on that activity entirely. All-in-all a very good product!

  • Just What I Needed

Very powerful remote with pretty good software to help you get it set up. My only complaint it the restrictions that are in place when you are programming the 4 activity buttons. Logitech guides you in setting up your activities which works most of the time, but I have run into a situation that requires a slightly more customized start-up sequence, which the software is incapable of allowing. Other than that, this is a fantastic remote. I love that it is rechargeable, has a customizable screen, and feels good when you hold it. The software allows you to do just about everything you could ever want to as far as customizing buttons goes.

  • Great Remote

Nice that it is rechargeable (shares my S4 charger) I am using it to replace my Directv remote that does not handle my LG and Samsung Blu-ray players. You must have an Internet Connection to program it as it is done via Logitech website. The good is any updates to the remote are done automatically during programming. Battery life for me only last a couple of days before recharging. The batteries are standard (2) AA which you can get extras if needed like Energizer rechargeable.

  • Deal Breaker for Some People

Had one fail...battery terminal springs broke. Overall...love these remotes. They are pretty easy to setup, are flexible (can learn commands, etc), control every device I have and work well. For programming these, no Linux support is available. Do not understand why!...a Linux Super User could write an app, for them, in a short time and probably for free. This is the second electronics manufacturer (DynaJet being the other) this past month that have pretty good products but I have decided I can no longer support and now am forced to look 'off shore'. Garmin gps is probably next. The sole reason for maintaining an increasingly insecure, for my purposes, Mircrosoft Windows installation is that. If you are using Windows, you will have no problem programming these. The more people find out about how computers work, maybe they'll begin to see what's driving Linux....

  • Don't forget to recharge

Terrific once you get the hang of programming. Buttons for watching TV and other selections are great and may be better then touch screens. Could be that I was remembering how to program with previous Logitech software and became confused. Also, don't forget to recharge. It is easy to forget if accustomed to charging cradle used with other Harmony remotes.

  • Great control, but has response delay after using an Activity button unable to control PS3/PS4...

This control is very easy to program and has great capability for learning comands and applying them, but after using an activity button it almost always has about 30 to 45 second delay after completing an activity and allowing you to use the buttons to control the devices related to the selected activity. During the delay all buttons you pressed are buffered and applied after the end of the delay. This is very annoying because if you need to lower the volume or do something else, nothing occurs during the delay. When are "universal" remote control designers going to incorporate PS3/PS4 control capability for watching Blu-Ray movies into the controlers? I still have to use the PS3 Blu-Ray controller, even though I have a "Universal Remote" that was developed well after the PS3 had already been in the market for years. If it wasn't for the delay and the inablity to control a PS3/PS4, I would have given it 5 stars.
