The spindle gear is cracked, loose and causing the problem. You need to remove the platter on your turntable to see the old spindle gear. The old cracked gear can be removed from the top without disassembling your turntable.

Solid performer
When the SL-23 arrived, I tested it and I noticed that platter speed was fluctuating. I did some research and it turns out that this particular TT's speed selector and speed fine adjustment pots as well as the speed variable resistors need contact cleaning every few years. I did just that. Now, I believe my SL-23 works like new. This is a solid performer. Also, I like the classic look and the automatic return function. I am very happy with this vintage gem.
