Barbra Streisand's adaptation of Pat Conroy's lyrical, passionate novel concerns romance as it emerges from the ashes of a traumatic childhood. Southerner Tom Wingo is going through a midlife crisis: He's got no job, a disintegrating marriage, and a drinking problem. But he gets a jolt of reality when he hears that his sister has attempted suicide. Tom instantly heads to New York to meet Susan Lowenstein, his sister's psychiatrist. As Tom provides Susan with information about his sibling and their dysfunctional family, the two become more intimate and soon begin an affair. As the romance blossoms, the repressed Tom and the guarded Susan find they are able to help each other with their respective problems. In particular, Tom is finally able to discuss a devastating incident from his youth. He Goes Back
He sinned in the affair while still married but repented upon his wife, in her sinful affair being broken off, calling him home to her and their daughters. Just because the destruction of a family begins because of the weakness of mankind, does not mean that destruction has to culminate in the ruining under curse, of husband, wife and children. Numbers 14:18 (NASB) 18 'The LORD is slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generations.' The Lord recognizes repentance and turning again to the Only Way, Truth and Life....but continued battle again the King Jesus Christ who is that Way, the embodiment of the Law of God, which He writes on the hearts of His Children, results in a lifetime marred in curse and pain.
