Brilliant, one of my favorite books
I bought this copy as a gift, because I first read it years ago and was so impressed by the work I wanted to share it. I am not religious, but feel knowledge of the Bible is essential to an understanding of history, culture, and civilization, at least in the West. There is also a great deal of beauty in the literature. Jack Miles brings many years of studying The Old Testament to his perception of God as a developing, changing character through the books. Miles's insights are striking and stay with one. He makes sense of things otherwise hard to understand. I had trouble getting into the book at the beginning but found once I was in, it was the kind of page-turner I didn't want to put down. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about what so many people believe in and would like some of the confusion Bible reading can cause cleared up.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned
