    Christian discipleship IS costly

    This is a "tough read." Bonhoeffer had not yet been arrested by the Gestapo but it becomes obvious, after reading this, why he eventually was. It is pertinent in this modern time because of all the pressure put upon Christians by many groups, philosophies, and political movements that stand opposed to orthodox Christianity. It is a difficult read because, early on in the book, Bonhoeffer states that Christ calls Christians to die with Him, not fight for Him. Many folks in 1930's Germany didn't want to hear that message and many, in the western world of today, don't want to hear it now, either.     Great Book

    Great book in original German. I am sure. It's a difficult subject. I wish I could read it in German. The translation to English is very poor. That makes it so much more difficult to follow his thread of thought.

    Deep But Enlightening Book

    This book has of deep content. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a committed Christian pastor who was adamantly opposed to Hitler. I haven’t finished reading this book. I needed to take a break and read a light fiction novel.

    Compelling in its contents to hear what Christ claims of his followers.

    This book is not for the fainthearted, did not know what to expect when opening the first page but the initial sentence, "Christ bids a man to come and die," says it all. From that point on one is confronted by the demands of Christ to all who profess to be his disciple. Two things I wrote for myself about the book, it is intended to be a mirror calling you to become what Christ asks, two, it is the water to the soil from which a plant draws its life, the writing comes back to ones memory and asks you to practice what is being requested, or commanded. My opinion, everyone who would have a deeper relationship with G-d through Christ needs to read, meditate, and apply, you will not be the same.

    Will make you crazy.

    If you are a Christian, and you aren't crazy enough, this book can take you over the edge if you want that. Being committed to Christ is good, but this through this book Dietrich Bonhoeffer makes you feel like crap at every turn while pulling you forward to next level craziness. He was a martyr to the Faith, and I'm not sure he could live up to what he was wrote.
