About this product

Product Information

Sunset Riders is a side-scrolling shooter game for up to four players on the Sega Genesis. After years as an arcade game, Konami released Sunset Riders for the Sega Genesis. Sunset Riders lets players choose between bounty hunters Steve, Billy, Bob, and Cormano, each of themout to hunt outlaws. These characters have individual strengths and weaknesses, including the use of different weapons such as pistols and shot guns. A player can choose to play independently, team up with a friend for a co-op game, or play in versus mode with two or more friends. The general idea of the game is to locate the bad guys, who all have large bounties on their heads, and kill them before they kill you. Sunset riders will also save a few girls along the way, fitting the stereotype of the old west action film. The Genesis version includes running and shooting at enemies which change based on the setting of the level. Game play on the Sega takes place on trains, in old western towns, and in old west deserts against gunslingers, knife throwers, bulls, female bandits, and Indians. Sunset Riders uses power ups like rapid fire and duel weapons, where game play involves one character with two weapons, to help gamers defeat the levels. Players can snatch dynamite sticks from the female bandits to throw back at enemies before the dynamite explodes. This is one of the Genesis games that uses the slide technique to help players dodge the bullets. In a two-player game, players can work together to protect each other and thwart enemies that sneak up from the back. Button combinations on the joystick help characters complete a variety of moves like jump, duck, slide, and shoot to avoid being shot or killed in a stampede. Players increase their high score by collecting coins of different values and by winning bonus stages placed between different levels. This Sega Genesis game offers seven levels total and ends with a fight between the players and one of the big bosses, which take more power to defeat. The game ends when one of the riders defeats the final big boss. In a multi-player game the rider who inflicts the most damage on the big boss will be awarded the win for clearing the level. Although Sunset Riders is a retro arcade game, it still provides hours of game play for gamers who enjoy nostalgic games that allow players to compete or join forces.

Excellent game - great multiplayer - must own!

Very fun & challenging game for the sega system. This game is similar to the SNES version but still feels like a different game. This game is a hidden gem for this system and my personal favorite. I strongly recommend anyone who owns a sega to play this. I regulary play this (in 2019) with my brother & nephew a couple times a week - its a fun multi-player game. If given the option, buy the SNES version (buy both really). I find the graphics better and the gameplay to be better on SNES but the sega version is still a top game. How has this game not been remastered?

Try before you buy Sunset Riders for the Genesis

The SEGA Genesis version of Sunset Riders is more of a custom made version rather than an arcade conversion or approximation. This is the exact same scenario as with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Vs Teenage Mutant Nijna Turtles: The HyperStone Heist. Some of the cons: Two of the playable characters are missing, no cinematic intro, graphics' colours are somewhat dark and thus make enemy fire hard to see in some stages, many cinematic intermissions are missing, many stages are completely changed and don't resemble the arcade version at all, voice overs are the usual raspy Genesis fare. Some of the pluses: No slowdown, you can continue where you are defeated instead of repeating the stage, there are fewer bosses to compensate for larger levels, the horseback riding mini game ...

  • Not as good as SNES version

The sega version is good, some cool added levels. But overall just not as solid as the SNES and arcade versions. Worth having tho.
