Reviews"... will delight anyone who has a love for the annals of the American stage." - Newsweek "This is show business, this America... this is Gypsy Rose Lee!" - Tennessee Williams "I found it irresistable. SynopsisGypsy Rose Lee's memoir became a New York Times bestseller in 1957, inspiring the 1959 hit musical, two movies, and three revivals. Now a fourth, directed by Arthur Laurents and starring Patti LuPone, is lighting up New York, winning top Broadway theatre awards, including three 2008 Tony Awards, as well as raves from critics and audiences: "No matter how long you live, you'll never see a more exciting production." -- Terry Teachout, The Wall Street Journal "Watch out, New York This GYPSY is a wallop-packing show of raw power." -- Ben Brantley, The New York Times "Not your ordinary theater experience. This is the best production of the best damn musical ever." --Liz Smith, Syndicated Columnist The memoir, which Gypsy began as a series of pieces for The New Yorker, contains photographs and newspaper clippings from her personal scrapbooks and an afterword by her son, Erik Lee Preminger. At turns touching and hilarious, Gypsy describes her childhood trouping across 1920s America through her rise to stardom as The Queen of Burlesque in 1930s New York--where gin came in bathtubs, gangsters were celebrities, and Walter Winchell was king. Gypsy's story features outrageous characters--among them Broadway's funny girl, Fanny Brice, who schooled Gypsy in how to be a star; gangster Waxy Gordon, who fixed her teeth; and her indomitable mother, Rose, who lived by her own version of the Golden Rule: "Do unto others ... before they do you.", The dazzling, no-holds-barred memoir that inspired a Broadway legend- Gypsy is a true American original, told by the woman who lived it with wit, grit, and a rhinestoned wink. Before there was Mama Rose or Let Me Entertain You , there was Gypsy Rose Lee-a whip-smart, fearless, and gloriously complicated woman whose life on the road with her unstoppable stage mother and spotlight-stealing little sister became the stuff of showbiz legend. Now back in the spotlight thanks to the acclaimed Broadway revival starring Audra McDonald, Gypsy is Lee's funny, subversive, and poignant memoir of growing up in the ragtag world of 1920s vaudeville and emerging, against the odds, as a singular star of 1930s burlesque. Told in her unmistakable voice-wry, stylish, and heartbreakingly observant- Gypsy reveals a vanished world of stage mothers, train-jumping troupes, and smoke-filled nightclubs, where gin was homemade and ambition was everything. Alongside rare photos and memorabilia from her own scrapbooks and an afterword by her son Erik Lee Preminger, this unforgettable memoir captures the real woman behind the myth- sharp, resilient, and always in command of her story.

  • Great addition to collection

Book was in excellent condition, but this book is not as full of information as the books by her son and sister...wanted to add it to my collection of GRL books. Interesting to hear her own take on things in her own words, especially knowing more about her now than when the book was written

  • READ THE BOOK!

Boy, were they off in the movie! Though Gypsy is one of my all-time favorite films, the book is more detailed. I'm still waiting to see if Herbie pops up, and Rose doesn't come off as being as notorious as in the movie! A great book so far.

  • Awesome book about an awesome lady!

Years ago I saw the movie, and was always wondering how she got started and why. This book really tells it like it was and how one thing led to another. She was a true survivor in a time that showed your True Grit.
