  • Nice idea, mediocre execution, please fix this Emerson!

The male spade connectors are not long enough to allow A/C system wiring connectors to fully seat on the spades. The plastic top cover needs a redesign in this area, to allow enough clearance to prevent system wiring insulation from laying against the cover. I was able to mostly solve this problem by cutting away some of the plastic surrounding the connectors. The contact markings on the device and instructions are hopelessly confused! The "L" and "T" side terminology and diagrams on the instruction sheet are contradictory when comparing the front and back side of the sheet. The labels on the mechanical drawing on the front of the sheet don't match the wiring diagrams on the back. And on the unit itself, the labels on the sticker applied to the front of the unit (apparently as an afterthought) don't match the mechanical drawing on the instruction sheet. Also, the raised lettering for the spade connections on the unit only applies to systems that have L1 and T1 switched. My Rheem A/C system has L2 and T2 switched (they are actually labeled "L3" and "T3" on the wiring diagram), so all of the spade connections are swapped on my system vs. the raised lettering on the unit. I scraped away that raised lettering and also removed the sticker on the front of the unit, to prevent confusion for anyone coming behind me and looking at my work. Emerson should have made the top cover more generic and just ditched the label and raised lettering altogether. Likewise for their instruction sheet, they shouldn't have included wiring diagrams and connection labels that were not universal for the industry. I've probably voided the five year warranty due to the modifications I made to the top cover to make this unit more serviceable. It feels like a Rev. B design that should be released under a new & improved "SureSwitch II" model lineup. Because of these issues I had to answer "no" to "Is it of good quality?" However I still recommend this unit, or at least something like it. Brownout protection is a must (at least in my state, where politics is trumping sound power engineering & planning); switching current at the sine wave null point (which this unit supposedly does) should increase contact and compressor service life; and sealed switch contacts are a necessity (though some traditional mechanical contactors also have this feature). Unfortunately AFAIK only Emerson is offering a unit like this that offers all these features at such a great price point. The closest competing unit I could find (which also offers hard start protection) was five times the price of this unit. So I will stick with Emerson for now.

  • Worth the money and peace of mind.

The solid state relay is quiet. The relay has electrical brown out protection built in. The contacts will not wear away or burn like traditional contactors always do. Traditional contactors will fail and are costly to have replaced with a new one. This solid state sure switch relay should last longer than the the heat pump itself. Great peace of mind.

  • Good addition to A/C.

Good piece of equipment and long lasting.
