I have owned several Yamaha receivers over the years and the RX line is one of the most flexible, versatile, and powerful receivers on the market. It can handle just about any peripheral - from CD's and DVD's to digital streaming, HD radio, and any HDMI source. These things are powerful and run relatively cool. But you want that power to ensure good clean sound even at low volumes. Yamaha's YPAO microphone easily helps calibrate the receiver to your room and speakers. And if you don't like the YPAO's auto settings, you can manually adjust it as you like. Further, a variety of "sound fields" allow the Yamaha to emulate a variety of venues and styles. And its "Silent Cinema" setting helps you listen to a full sound spectrum at low volumes (not waking up your family).

My second Yamaha receiver, and from my experience, I'll probably never buy any other brand. This device is amazing. Quality throughout. The sound is clean and smooth. (Don't let anyone tell you that there is no difference in sound quality between better amps!) It took the better part of a (pleasurable) day to absorb all the features from the manual, and get it all set up perfectly. Now, I have a second independent speaker 'zone' set up on my patio (controllable with a second included remote). I've saved dozens of great sounding, commercial-free internet music stations to the unit's internet station "bookmarks". I've assigned the unit an IP address and can EASILY control it through an internet browser anywhere in the house. I played Bach's Toccata and Fugue (an "extreme organ tsunami")at a level I could literally feel in my skin, and this unit still had 20dB of clean power left on the volume control to go. (Lost the kitties for an hour after that test.) BluRay movies sound incredible with the newer pure sound modes. My wife can listen to and control her iPod while on her stairclimber through this unit's remote, and see her iPod's songs across the room displayed on our big-screen TV. (Got the extra iPod adapter for this on eBay, too.) The auto-setup with the microphone can input up to 8 listening positions, and equalized/leveled everything perfectly (for my tastes). Can you tell -- I love this thing! Biggest tech high I've had since first playing original Doom in 1993 on a new 486DX computer :-DRead full review
