About this product

Product Information

Thunder Force II is a two-dimensional futuristic shooter that alternates between top view and side view with the passing of each level. The action takes place in the Lone Star System amongst ancient ruins, skyscrapers, caves, and an underground city. While piloting your super powerful fighter, your objective is to shoot everything in sight. There are four standard levels of play, each with two stages. At the end of each level, you must defeat a giant boss. The bosses names are Kiyara, Zoetrope, Galileo, Elephant Man. The fifth and final level is called the Ultra Combat Weapon Fortress. Here you must face a boss called the Humanoid Hunter.

In the top view levels you can upgrade your weapon to Twin-shot, Back Fire, Five Wave, Destroy, Wide Shot, Hunter, Clash, or Laser. The side view level special weapons are Twin-shot, Back Fire, Laser, Hunter, Wave Shot, Side Blaster, Nova, and Mega Flash. The final Ultra Combat level adds a few extra weapons: the Claw and the Breaker create force fields around your ship, and the Roll momentarily boosts your speed.

  • Makes me wish I was around for Genesis launch

Blisteringly good. The top-down parts have taken a lot of crap ove the years, but they bring a bit of strategy and plenty of old-school visual glory. The left-to-right bits are punishing, unfair memory-fests that should keep fans of the genre swearing. And fans of the genre know that's a good thing. Sure, this might be more of a vintage-ghetto gaming fetish item. But unlike most of the titles with those adjectives, you'll actually enjoy yourself with Thunder Force II.

  • Number 3 is superior

I really want to like THUNDER FORCE II. The horizontal scrolling sections are awesome and have that familiar THUNDER FORCE flair, but these alternate between overhead stages that, rather than being standard vertical scrolling sections with fixed paths, allow free roaming. Finding where you're supposed to go in these parts can be a pain to say the least. THUNDER FORCE III is far better, but II is not too bad for collectors.

  • One of the best shooters on the GENESIS!

This is a TECHNO SOFT classic for your Genesis! The mixture of overhead & sideview levels is interesting & fun to play! Warning: this game is hard to beat, but fair & you will get your money's worth out of it!!! The music is also memorable & really adds to the experience. Once you've played TF2, you need to check out their other masterpieces: Herzog Zwei, Thunderforce 3 & 4! You will NOT be disappointed in any of these games. Also, their cover art is really nice, although the cartridge has the Japnese box art on the label & it looks lame when compared to the USA box art.

  • Good, but not great.

Better than average, but not a super great shooter! Thunder Force III and Lightening Force (Thunder Force IV) are better in my opinion. Still worth it if you can find it cheap. The graphics are a bit dated compared to the other Thunder Force games. Music is on par for Technosoft. I don't really like the top down levels, but the side scrolling levels are excellent.
