A girl kneels over the grave of her murdered dog, praying for a miracle, while off in the distance, a man rides toward town on a pale horse. Clint Eastwood's PALE RIDER was the filmmaker's first Western in nearly a decade. It finds a pleasant balance between the mystical revisionism of films such as HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER and the traditional Western. Eastwood stars as the Preacher, who wanders into a dusty California town and tries to rescue a community of gold prospectors that is being terrorized by the local corporate mining operation, which is strip-mining the land. He's taken in by Hull Barrett (Michael Moriarty), who lives with Sarah Wheeler (Carrie Snodgrass) and her 14-year-old daughter, she of the murdered pooch, Megan (Sydney Penny). The Preacher is something of a blend of Eastwood's Man with No Name and the title character of George Stevens's SHANE. The story and treatment are straightforward and entertaining, and the strong performances draw the audience in. The Preacher remains a mysterious character, but in the end, as he takes on the evil mining corporation's hired guns, it's impossible not to root for him.

Clint Eastwood is the pale rider. He is a man of no name, just an occupation, a traveling preacher. As he rides into a snow covered small Northern California town he sees a bunch of bullies attacking a peaceful, unarmed man. The Preacher wades into them just as any good samaritan would have done. The man is Hull Barrett (Michael Moriarty), and he is one of several "tin pans", miners who pan for gold dust in the streams of Corbet Canyon. Hull's group have been constantly under siege by riders who work for a large hydraulic mining operation. The prospectors have legal claims, but if they can be chased out, the big mine can take over. Sarah, isn't married to Hull yet, but plans to marry. Sarah has a fifteen year old daughter, Megan, who just days earlier when the riders tore up their camp and killer her dog, prayed for help. In the ensuing days, it becomes pretty obvious that although the Preacher is a man of God, he is also someone else, someone not to be messed with. The owner of the corporate mining operation is Coy LaHood. When he tries to bribe the Preacher with offers of a church in town, rich Sunday collections, and nice clothes, he has no luck. Eastwood then suggests that LaHood pay them to leave and he then offers to pay $1000 per claim for the prospectors to leave, or face a gang of Regulators, Marshall Stockburn, and his deputies, all killers. Feeling that the Preacher will be there to handle things for them, they refuse the offer. The Preacher knows Stockburn, and you just have the feeling that there is a bad history that needs to be settled. Hull Barrett has guts and wants everyone to stand up and fight. Sarah and Megan are both sort of in love with the Preacher, but he refuses their advances. When the morning of the showdown comes, the Preacher is gone. He has gone to get his guns. Upon returning, he finds Megan being accosted by LaHood's son Josh who runs things for his dad. Josh is about eighteen. The preacher gets there just in time and saves Megan, and shoots Josh in the hand. After taking Megan home, Eastwood and Hull dynamite the hydraulic mining operation and buildings. Then Eastwood goes off to meet Stockburn and his men. He chases Hull's horse off, because he don't want him hurt. In the showdown, Eastwood kills all of the deputies and Stockburn. As Megan is racing to town to throw herself at the Preacher, he rides off the same way that he arrived.

A Great Movie From A Veteran Actor That Couldn't Be Better
I love Clint Eastwood western movies, and Pale Rider is right up there at the top with his great performances in the movie. I'm very happy I was able to get a copy of this movie. I decided to buy it, because it was one of my father's favorite movies, and I also enjoyed it very much. I enjoy watching western films, and I have to say that this was one of Clint Eastwoods best films.
