Outstanding in Most Respects, With a Few Annoyances
Bought this receiver about 1 1/2 years ago, use it regularly for music CDs and home theater. I researched and bought this unit with modest needs in mind. It has several features that I'll probably never use (like satellite zones and Sirius), but experience tells me to it's usually better to have too many features than too few (within reason). I like the generous array of input/output options, the ability to upconvert analog video, and the number of surround processing decoders. The power output is right for my setup, the unit looks great, and it costs considerably less than one of those over-the-top units. Audio output is excellent, most folks will be more than satisfied. The unit does give off an unusually high amount of heat when idle, but this does not seem to affect reliability. Be ... Be aware of this if you plan to place the unit in an enclosed space - additional cooling will probably be required. Video performance is OK, but nothing special. As a pass-through hub, though, it works great - lots of switching options. Most video freaks will want to tweak their TV or BD player for the best quality. Overall, good value for the price. But, I have one major complaint that prevents a 5-star rating: The senseless complexity of the control menus. The OSD is a good idea, but Pioneer stopped before it was complete. It's really no more useful than the front-panel display, once you learn how to scroll through it. The audio auto-calibration is nice as well, but most users find it far from perfect. You'll still have to make manual adjustments if you want a good match for your room and speakers. This is where the unit really falls short. The complexity of the menus and submenus makes routine tweaking really frustrating. It's possible alright, but very time-consuming. Routine adjustmnents like Equalization, Speaker Balance, and Surround Levels are buried within the menu system, and easily overlooked until you become familiar. Unfortunately, Pioneer's manual is very poor at explaining all the options and controls. I found myself at the AVS forums several times just to master the basics, and unlock some of the menu shortcuts. The remote only adds to the complexity, instead of making routine tasks simpler. To be fair, that's pretty common with most A/V receivers. The K.I.S.S. principle appears to be obsolete. I would have given this unit 3 stars if not for the excellent sound quality, generous input/output array, and trouble-free operation. If it proves to be durable in the long haul, I can live with the clunky interface. UPDATE: 12/2011 After better than 2 years of use, unit still performs like new. At the current price, this receiver is well worth checking out.

Wow!!! A Wonder of Technology w/ Fantastic Sound!!!
Instead of having it play 7 speakers in the same room, I set up my Pioneer AVX 1019ax to play 5 Bose surround speakers in my living room as zone 1 & to play two outdoor-inground speakers for the patio area as zone 2. So I can be watching a DVD inside, in full surround sound, while my kids are listening to their Ipod, through the Pioneer's frontal hookup, as they swim in pool. This Pioneer gave me the option of adding additional amplifiers but at 120 watts per channel, it powers my 5 Bose speakers, including woofer, & my 2 8" omni speakers from outdoor speaker depot, quite nicely with clear highs, solid mids and deep lows.....even when both zones are turned on! The television surround hookup was a breeze although I did have some trouble getting the on-screen guide to work. This is ... It has been a total "DISASTER" and a "HUGE HEADACHE"
I believed I was making a good deal in purchasing this Pioneer VSX-1019AH 7.1 Receiver thru E-Bay and ibuyplasma (seller)..Turns out that the receiver worked about two (2) to three (3) minutes and "QUIT"!!! No Power at all!!! ibuyplasma has been extremely devious in answering with a true, honest and/or a straight solution to a product that they sold and I promptly paid. I'm not at all disputing payment. Thought, that is all ibuyplasma insists in refering to in their e-mail messagies thru E-Bay. I WILL NEVER BUY FROM THEM AGAIN!!!! REFER ANY ONE OF MY FRIENDS AND RELATIVES TO THEM WILL NEVER HAPPEN!!! To me, they have manifested nothing but dishonesty it's it's true form!!!! Makes me embarrassed of myself for not doing a little more homework on asking about being "Authorized Dealers" from ... Great Receiver with a small learning curve
After doing hours of research to find a heart for my home theater system I finally decided to buy a Pioneer VSX receiver. Originally I had hoped to find a 919 but then settled foe the 1019 after every 919 I searched for was sold out. When I first opened the package I was glad to see everything was well packaged and the unit itself had a very impressive fit and finish, shiny black, sexy but a potential fingerprint magnet. At first I found myself feeling as if I were trying to decipher an alien language as I flipped through the manual and studied the remote, however after some time getting to know the receiver and how it operates the knowledge involved was quickly gained. After wiring up the speakers and using the packaged mic to tune all of my speakers I was shocked by how good ... After wiring up the speakers and using the packaged mic to tune all of my speakers I was shocked by how good the sound from my speakers was, even without fine tuning anything myself I was able to hear sounds and subtle portions of my music like I hadn't in the past, I was definitely impressed with the sound quality. The auto-calibration worked like a charm, and after a couple days of listening and fine tuning a couple of my speakers I am absolutely blown away by this receiver. the display is clear and the information is understandable, aka-it makes sense and shows you exactly what you need to see. The HDMI pass through was great, only having one HDMI cable going to the TV is definitely convenient. I also have more input/output jacks than I'll probably ever need. The only cons I can think of are that the manual could have been a bit more clear and descriptive about a few things, and that the unit runs a bit warm, but never terribly hot, I'm sure it will be fine as long as it has at least some room for ventilation. All in all I am very happy with my purchase and would recommend this receiver to anybody looking for a 7.1 receiver with room to grow (HDMI ports as well as numerous "future proof" features)
