A Step Up From Other One-Cup Coffee Makers
This coffee maker isn't perfect, but it's actually an improvement over the several Black & Decker (B&D) one-cup coffee makers I have had over the past 20 years or so. Let's get the few negative items out of the way first: 1.) A little more coffee is needed to make the same strength coffee compared to the B&D. I attribute this to the "Melitta-style permanent filter used in the B&D compared to the shallower filter used with this unit. 2.) This unit has two permanent filters that must be rinsed out after each cup compared to only one with the B&D. 3.) The dual-height cup rest doesn't fit my tall coffee cup in either position. To avoid splashing I needed to use a special rest made from a cheap electrical box to get my cup up high enough so splashing is no a problem. But I think this ... But I think this coffee maker is superior to the B&D is several ways. 1.) The 2-stage permanent filter removes more of the sediment that the B&D allowed to pass into the cup. 2.) This unit is very quiet compared to the noise that the B&D unit makes. 3.) If you forget to put the water into this unit, a sensor merely flashes an indicator and turns the unit off without any heating at all; the B&D must go through a short heating cycle, with accompanying noise, before shutting itself off. If water is added too soon after the B&D shuts off this way, it spits and pops until the heating element cools off. 4.) Water is much easier to pour neatly into this unit than the B&D. 5.) All my tall travel mugs will work with this unit, not just the shorter ones. 6.) The stainless exterior is much easier to keep clean than the black plastic body of the B&D. 7.) This unit can handle up to about 14 oz. of water per cup, although a smaller amount can be used as desired. Apparently a small amount of water is retained in this coffee maker, so be sure to follow the instructions before making the first cup. Overall I am very pleased with this unit.

Weak coffee
I was looking forward to having a single cup coffee maker that didn't require pods. However, even brewing on the bold setting and using the correct amount of water and coffee, the coffee was too weak for my taste. I guess I could try using a lot less water and the amount of coffee for 14 oz and see the results. Even with two fine mesh filters, there was sludge in the bottom of the cup. I'll keep trying different options with the grind and amount of water, but unless you like weak coffee, I don't recommend this product.I was looking forward to having a single cup coffee maker that didn't require pods. Good solid machine
This coffee maker is well made, with a solid feel. Techy looking. Lots of stainless steel parts visible. This device should last a long time the way its built. Although you don't need a paper filter, I use one anyways as a little bit of grounds slips through into the cup. Seems to work better with fine ground. If I use normal grind it needs about 25% more coffee than other drip makers. I wish the drip pan was removable though, I need to sponge it out. My old maker had a removable one which you can wash under the faucet in 2 seconds. The grinds basket has 3 parts which you have to clean each time. Might be a pain for some, - for me its part of a pleasant ritual. Easy to clean though - run under faucet. Coffee comes out hot to just right in temp. Not scalding, not ... I'm 66, retired and live alone with my cat Swiffer in a 55+ mobile home community, but this coffee maker is also geared for younger people who need a quick cup of coffee in the morning before heading out to work. I got it because sometimes in the afternoon I only want a quick cup of coffee and not have to use my larger Melitta 10 cup Thermal coffee maker. I read a lot of reviews on the internet including the ones on Amazon and You Tube and some people were distressed because a couple drops of coffee ended up splashing out on their counter tops. The Hamilton Beach Scoop 49981 is certainly well worth the price. My coffee mug is about 10 ounces and I use it to measure the water for the coffee maker and then use 1 standard coffee measure scoop (2 Tbsp.) of grounds. It works perfectly and I generally use the 'Bold' setting and I get a great mug of coffee!! For the price of the unit, even if bought new, it is well worth it because you can use whatever coffee you want. I am also very happy with this coffee maker not only because it costs a lot less than a Keurig single cup coffee maker, but since you are free to use your choice of ground coffee there are no plastic pods to impact your trash can and subsequently landfills. I do consider it a "Green" Product, the 'scoop' and the secondary filter eliminate the need for a paper filter therefore reducing paper production and subsequent trash in landfills. By the way,I use a permanent filter in my Melitta coffee maker. Not only does it result in a richer full-bodied and tastier coffee, but it does not impact paper production and more trash in a landfill. I am very pleased with this Hamilton Beach "The Scoop" coffee maker, it is versatile allowing one to make a single mug of coffee or a travel mug full and works very well for both and is environmentally friendly. It makes coffee quickly, it's easy to clean, and has a footprint smaller than a gallon of milk. I am proud of myself that I chose this fantastic coffee maker!!!
