It is important to know that this unit has a limited travel range for both the fine / slow motion adjustments. (altitude and azimuth) The fine adjustments are not infinite (or 360 degree) and limit the amount of the adjustment using the cables on both axis. What this means is that once you "close in" on your subject- the fine adjustment while using the flex knobs is limited to a fixed range. Therefore, if you are near the end of the range and want to go beyond the "limit", you must first "back off" the fine adjustment, re-center the scope/binoculars, and then continue using the flex cables. The other limitations of this tripod are it's 45" height (perfect for use with a stool- though,) it's tendancy to creep slightly if the load is unbalanced, and it's inability to tilt straight up. That being said, this is a sturdy platform tripod- and if your scope/binocular/camera is properly balanced- it is a accurate means of fine tracking and control while viewing or taking photos. I have used it for spotting distant wildlife and it works very well for this purpose as well as a solid photographic tripod.Read full review
These type of tripods have gone up price wise and are being made light and cheap. I like the slow motion controls but the tripod has a weak cheap feel so I wouldn't call this a "heavy duty" tripod. Looks okay but like everything you have to pay a lot more for quality, but it will do.

The head portion is solid and sound but the adjusting leg portion is not as solid or stable as I expected. This is, by no means a wobbly tripod but I did expect something a little more firm, overall I'ld say is is very good, but the adjusting leg knob area could have been better. I use it for spotting and will use it for star gazing when weather allows

When you can adjust it with the two knobs you have to manually move it to where you need it. Then fine-tune it with the knobs.

From Celestron I would expect that their experts would design something, then go out and TRY IT! IF they had done that, The altitude adjustment has NO gross adjustment like the azimuth does. Do they think all you want to do is look around in a circle and 10% up?? To look further up…You have to get out a socket set and loosen / tighten a bolt to make the thing move. IN addition, there is only ONE level of tripod leg extension, which means you must either “little people”, or be sitting to use this REALLY Use this thing. VERY POORLY DESIGNED.
