I bought my AV7600VOR last year on Ebay and fly with it VFR. For a 1980’s backup radio it’s pretty good, a little bigger and heavier then a Sporty’s A300 but that’s OK. If you plan to use this as a backup radio in the cockpit, be sure to use it for regular coms for a while so you know it’s limits, don’t wait for a failure to find out! FOR ALL OLDER RADIOS, KNOW THIS: LCD displays are small, poor contrast and poorly backlighted compared to today. In an emergency, in turbulence (shaky hand, shaky display) or in the dark, you may never see the error display that tells you to key in the correct frequency again. (On the 7600, hit ‘Scan’ for the last valid frequency and start again.) ANTENNAS: All radios, NEW and OLD I’ve tested (STS, KX99, Sporty’s, Icom) on a RF Vector Network Analyzer actually have badly tuned antennas that often peak near 137Mhz, not in the com band at all! Typical worst SWR at 118MHz is 7-to-1 and 3-to-1 at 137Mhz, this means up to 56% of transmitter power never leaves the antenna! Not kidding. See pic. All OEMs owe us better then that, every mile of extra range buys you 30 more seconds of safety! If your A/C has an antenna BNC on the panel, get a good VHF 50 ohm coax cable. An A/C mounted antenna will be much better. SUMMARY: I use my 7600 as a monitor on my desk and fly VFR with it weekly. But my go-to for night flying is a Sporty’s SP200, well lit LCD & keypad, easy to clear an error & get on frequency. I could say more, but that covers the big stuff. Read full review
